Ray Bassett describes himself as \u201ca storyteller for storytellers.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, he begins bringing a daily talk show to listeners of WUTC-FM 88.1, Chattanooga\u2019s National Public Radio station. Scenic Roots<\/em> will air at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, leading in to NPR\u2019s national news program, All Things Considered<\/em>, which begins at 4 p.m. weekdays.<\/p>\n

Bassett recently joined the staff of WUTC-FM, based at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, bringing more than 20 years of experience as a producer and editor in New York City\u2014including with famed broadcaster Charles Osgood on The Osgood File<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bassett also brought the idea of launching a program that didn\u2019t exist anywhere else in the city\u2019s broadcast market: long-form conversations with the people, events and issues that matter to the region.\u00a0 The idea comes to life in Scenic Roots.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI spent more than 20 years in New York City, and I had a great run between CBS News and the Associated Press \u2013 above all, as Charles Osgood\u2019s executive producer for radio for the last 10 years of his career. \u00a0After he decided to retire completely from broadcasting, I took a little sabbatical to figure out what I wanted to do next,\u201d Bassett says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted to be rooted in a community again, to do work that reflects the community\u2014the many corners of the community\u2014and do storytelling that resonates across all those communities within a community.\u201d<\/p>\n

About nine years ago, The Osgood File<\/em> did a piece after Chattanooga introduced a fiber-optic system that was first and fastest network in the United States. The nickname \u201cGig City\u201d was born.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat stuck in the back of my mind,\u201d Bassett says.<\/p>\n

When the position at WUTC opened, both the job and the city intrigued him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was ready for a change of place and a change of pace; I did a little research on the area and decided it could be a good fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Scenic Roots,<\/em> Bassett, along with producers Will Davis, Haley Solomon and Karley Dodson, plans to go \u201cbehind and beyond\u201d headlines and bring voices from across the spectrum to \u201cconversations that matter in the heart of Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most of all, serious or lighthearted, they want to give the Chattanooga radio audience \u201cgreat stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I am fascinated by what Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley uniquely offer, and I am honored to be part of WUTC’s brand-new push to provide local news and information for our community,\u201d Bassett says. \u201cFrom newscasts with Bill McLean to the show I will host, Scenic Roots,<\/em>\u00a0I am especially fortunate for the team around my show and all that they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bassett, a Minnesota native and alumnus of Carleton College, says Chattanooga has reminded him of various stops on his career path. For instance, he began work in radio on Lake Superior near where it separates Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe combined population of both of those cities when I was there a generation ago was about that of Chattanooga,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s synchronicity in so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such as the frequency of WUTC-FM, 88.1. It\u2019s the same as the station at Bassett\u2019s alma mater, Carleton College. Carleton\u2019s school colors\u2014maize and blue\u2014also are strikingly similar to UTC\u2019s blue and gold. And rivers: the Tennessee famously bends through Chattanooga, while the Mississippi separates Minneapolis\u2014where Bassett lived for a time\u2014from St. Paul, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Charles Osgood\u2019s wife, Jean, a native of Fayette County in West Tennessee, just east of Memphis and the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter I\u2019d been hired and before I moved down here, I teased her and said, \u2018You know, I\u2019m never going to forget you, Jean, once I move down there because I hear so many people who sound like you,\u2019\u201d Bassett says.<\/p>\n
