In recent years, he has focused on the effects that concussions and other brain injuries in athletes can have on the entire body, sometimes in \u201cvery, very subtle ways,\u201d he has said.<\/p>\n<p>In the research, he collaborated with Shellie Acocello, clinical education coordinator in health and human performance at UTC. By locating where the neurological issues are in the brain, trainers can develop exercises to offset whatever physical problems may crop up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHead injuries change the way your brain is processing information, so you can have a lower-extremity injury that affects your brain; you can have a brain injury that affects your lower extremities,\u201d Wilkerson says. \u201cFinding ways to address neurological problems in the brain may lead to methods to prevent long-term chronic deterioration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got evidence that we can improve those deficiencies. We know what deficiencies are,\u201d Wilkerson says. \u201cWe know they can help us tell the difference between those who have a concussion and those who don\u2019t.
