Truth is, though, it wasn\u2019t just another machine that squirts Coke or Sprite or Mello\u00a0Yello\u00a0into a cup. It was the one that wows you the first time you use it. A touchscreen is dotted with circular icons for various soft drinks. Press one, let it squirt into your cup for a moment, then stop it and put in another flavor \u2026 and another \u2026 and another. It\u00a0has the ability to\u00a0make 100 different flavor combinations.<\/p>\n<p>They call it the Coca-Cola Freestyle and, since debuting in 2009,\u00a0it\u00a0has\u00a0revolutionized\u00a0soft-drink\u00a0dispensing.\u00a0In Chattanooga, you can find it in\u00a0AMC Theatres,\u00a0Zaxby\u2019s,\u00a0Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Burger King and Moe\u2019s Southwest Grill, among others.\u00a0Nationwide, there now are about 50,000 dispensers pouring 14 million drinks per day.\u00a0\u201cIt took about 18 months in order to get the prototype together. It had a great design challenge,\u201d says\u00a0Kolls, who helped lead the research and development team that designed the Freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you remember, they did the boxes of (soft drink) syrup and each box was\u00a0roughly\u00a0about a cubic foot. And they had figured out that, in order to dispense 100 drinks, they needed 44 different ingredients.\u00a0So\u00a0our challenge was to take 44 cubic feet of liquid and get it into 44 cubic inches of space because that&#8217;s what it took in order to be able to mix all the syrups and the drinks in there and everything. Awesome challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With great secrecy, the first working prototype was put in a Mexican\u00a0food-style\u00a0restaurant in downtown Atlanta, he says. Still working under his confidentiality agreement,\u00a0Kolls\u00a0couldn\u2019t even tell his wife and kids.\u00a0\u201cMy family didn&#8217;t even know it was there until I told them that, \u2018Hey, we&#8217;re going to go have dinner tonight at a new Mexican restaurant,\u2019 you know?\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<p>After moving to\u00a0Atlanta\u00a0to work with Coke\u00a0in 2007,\u00a0Kolls\u00a0remained and now is president and CEO of Gr8BigIdeas and\u00a0its website,\u00a0TechConnectHub.com. Describing himself as a \u201cserial entrepreneur,\u201d he has\u00a0worked with\u00a0Coke as well as\u00a0such companies as Wells Fargo and USA Technologies, among others, and is a registered U.S. patent agent with\u00a0more than 85 patents\u00a0as an inventor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re patenting ideas,\u201d he explains. \u201cThey really break them into two categories. One is that they&#8217;ve either been reduced to practice, meaning that they&#8217;ve actually been physically built, or it&#8217;s just a construction on paper of what could be possible. And you can patent both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of times\u00a0with\u00a0these innovations, your mind and your pencil can run much faster than the engineers can build the ideas.\u00a0So\u00a0it&#8217;s perfectly normal to be maybe thinking about Generation Two and Three while you&#8217;re perfecting Generation One. And it also gives an opportunity for ideas to evolve over time, where you&#8217;ve tried things, and think of new things, and that type of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Filing for patents is an offshoot of his larger business, which is\u00a0connecting large corporations with inventors and innovators, a task that sometimes involves working with companies that are in the early stages of creating themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understood exactly how hard it was for startups to work with big companies,\u201d he says. But having worked with Coca-Cola, he also knew \u201cexactly how hard it is for big companies to work with startups.\u201d In short, he created a career by seeing a need in two separate industries and being the go-between.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve positioned myself right in the center to help big companies be able to access and connect with the young talent that they&#8217;re trying to get to in the community.\u00a0Connecting companies with each other revolves around three categories, he explains: Talent, knowledge and solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s either around talent where they&#8217;re looking for a specific talent to come in through an intern program, to work on some sort of technical challenge,\u201d he says. \u201cIt could be building an app, could be solving a problem, could be writing algorithms for a health care company. It could be all sorts of different things, but\u00a0ultimately\u00a0they&#8217;re looking for talent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other is they&#8217;re looking for knowledge. It means that they might be\u00a0an\u00a0industry and they&#8217;re very interested in how this\u00a0particular technology\u2014 like artificial intelligence or blockchain\u2014is going to change their industry, and they would like to get ahead of it.\u00a0They\u00a0want to find people who are researching these areas, who have knowledge of these areas, and bring them in for workshops and for the executives to interact with so you can bring knowledge into the company about new technologies<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr it&#8217;s about solutions. They&#8217;ve got a particular need; they&#8217;re looking for particular technology; and they want to find somebody who&#8217;s already been there and done that, that they can move quickly to commercialization on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of solving those issues is developing relationships with universities across the country because a great deal of tech research is going on in the schools. He comes to Chattanooga on a regular basis to maintain his relationships with faculty and staff at UTC\u00a0and also\u00a0with Chattanooga as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe startup community is emerging here in Chattanooga incredibly fast, right? There are a lot of companies trying to understand exactly how to engage. They are asking such questions as: \u2018How do I explain what I need them to do? How do I bring that technology into my company?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI&#8217;ve focused these last four or five years on just that subject matter. Just helping big companies access talent in the startup community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone quite understands what he does.\u00a0Not even those closest to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike\u00a0my parents said, \u2018Is that a real job?
