{"id":2824,"date":"2010-04-30T17:47:07","date_gmt":"2010-04-30T21:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=2824"},"modified":"2010-10-26T14:36:53","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T18:36:53","slug":"ace-chattanooga-promotes-engineering-architecture-and-construction-careers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2010\/04\/ace-chattanooga-promotes-engineering-architecture-and-construction-careers\/","title":{"rendered":"ACE Chattanooga promotes engineering, architecture, and construction careers"},"content":{"rendered":"<a title=\"UTC Chancellor Brown addresses ACE dinner by UTChattanooga, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/utchattanooga\/4566112457\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4052\/4566112457_53fee5b86f.jpg\" alt=\"UTC Chancellor Brown addresses ACE dinner\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"\/><\/a>\n<p>Students from seven local high schools recently worked with construction and engineering professionals to learn what it takes to be successful in this challenging and growing industry.<\/p>\n<p>UTC\u2019s Construction Management Program hosts the ACE Program in Chattanooga, a member of a national network dedicated to career direction for students in architecture, construction, and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really proud of being a part of this organization,\u201d said Dr. Nesli Alp, professor of engineering and coordinator of the construction management program at UTC. \u201cThis is the first year of ACE Chattanooga, and it\u2019s a great way to inform high school students about architecture, construction, and engineering majors by showing them real world applications.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More than $10,000 in scholarships was awarded at the 2010 ACE Chattanooga Awards Banquet, held recently at UTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cACE Chattanooga is a great demonstration of University-Community-Business collaboration, and it really helps the College and UTC to be more visible in our community,\u201d said Dr. Alp.<\/p>\n<a title=\"Dr. Neslihan Alp address ACE dinner by UTChattanooga, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/utchattanooga\/4566742750\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3317\/4566742750_a1706bac8d.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Neslihan Alp address ACE dinner\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"\/><\/a>\n<p>ACE was founded in 1995 in New York City with one team of 30 students. By 2008, the program had launched in 82 cities with more than 10,000 students. The program works to increase awareness among high school students of career opportunities in architecture, construction, and engineering and relies heavily on mentors from the professional ranks of the disciplines. ACE also provides scholarships for students participating in the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUTC\u2019s involvement in the ACE Program is another example of how we achieve our mission as a metropolitan university,\u201d said UTC Chancellor Roger Brown. \u201cConstruction is the second largest industry in the United States and by the year 2015, the industry expects to have one million job openings for qualified candidates. And yet, for every five people leaving the construction industry, only one person is entering.
