{"id":2870,"date":"2010-05-13T08:55:06","date_gmt":"2010-05-13T12:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=2870"},"modified":"2010-10-26T14:38:01","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T18:38:01","slug":"engineering-professor%e2%80%99s-software-onboard-nasa-shuttle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2010\/05\/engineering-professor%e2%80%99s-software-onboard-nasa-shuttle\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering professor\u2019s software onboard NASA shuttle"},"content":{"rendered":"<a title=\"Engineering professor\u2019s software onboard NASA shuttle by UTChattanooga, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/utchattanooga\/4603323615\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1038\/4603323615_ba4c3ea97d.jpg\" alt=\"Engineering professor\u2019s software onboard NASA shuttle\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"\/><\/a>\n<p>\u201cEXPRESS Payload Simulator\u201d software developed by UTC professor Dr.  Jim Henry is onboard the NASA Space Shuttle Atlantis that launched May  14.\u00a0 The software will be installed on Monday, May 24, for several days  of demonstration.\u00a0 Henry was invited to Houston to observe the progress  of that demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>Earth-bound researchers who communicate  with equipment in their laboratories use the Internet with web browsers  and file sharing to remotely control lab equipment.\u00a0 For 15 years, Henry  has been a leader in these activities, creating the first undergraduate  engineering labs in the world to have remote operation capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Boeing Corporation, a NASA contractor, wants to make this same familiar interface available to researchers who are working with their research equipment on the International Space Station (ISS).\u00a0\u00a0 When Boeing learned of Henry\u2019s capabilities with his remote laboratories work at UTC, he was asked by Boeing to collaborate and do the same for the ISS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy part of the project was to develop a prototype LabVIEW program that will be contained on the laptop computer collecting data on the ISS,\u201d Henry said.\u00a0 \u201cI also developed a ground-based LabVIEW program that sends commands to and receives responses from the laptop on the ISS.
