Like many mothers dealing with recently closed schools, Brandalyn Shropshire has spent a lot of time at home with her daughter.<\/p>\n

And, like many mothers dealing with recently closed schools, a certain level of frustration has built up when Shropshire is trying to do her work as assistant director of admissions at UTC while nine-year-old daughter Sydney keeps bugging her in different ways. The detonation point came several days ago, the fuse lit by math and her daughter\u2019s dismissive attitude.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to show her the way we <\/em>used to do math, and she says, \u2018No mama, that\u2019s just not it,\u2019\u201d Shropshire recalls.<\/p>\n

To unleash the bubbling volcano of irritation, Shropshire\u2014a professional comic on weekends\u2014ad libbed a minute-and-45-second video titled \u201cPrayer of a Desperate Mother.\u201d Apparently there are a lot of desperate moms out there because, since being posted to her Facebook page\u2014BJS Productions\u2014on Wednesday, March 18, the video has racked up more than 15 million views, according to the website.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that right \u2014 15 million.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFather God, I am your humble servant. What I am not<\/em> is a math teacher,\u201d she says in the video. \u201cI ask that you send down your angels of the Carry Over, Lord. Teach us that, if you carry the one over to the 10th place, you can get the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also laments a refrigerator door that\u2019s always open.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet again, the devil has attacked and sent down a tapeworm onto my child, Lord God,\u201d she pleads. \u201cI am not Denny\u2019s, Shoney\u2019s, IHOP nor Waffle House.\u201d<\/p>\n

The video has been featured on NBC Nightly News <\/em>and other TV newscasts, shared by thousands of people online and appeared on dozens of websites, many of which she has never heard of, says Shropshire, who graduated from UTC in 2008 with a degree in communication and has worked at the university for 13 years.<\/p>\n

Having performed clean comedy for about 12 years, Shropshire says she has tried \u201creally hard\u201d not to think about all the attention the video is getting. It\u2019s a bit overwhelming.<\/p>\n

A couple of days after the video was posted to a friend\u2019s Facebook page, Shropshire saw that it had 100 shares and joked with a friend, \u201cWhen do you know you\u2019ve gone viral?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past few years, she has posted videos to her Facebook page \u201call the time. Little cute videos because Facebook is my way to vent.\u201d Friends, family, fellow church members and others at UTC \u201cknow about that side of me,\u201d she says, but that\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n

Being funny obviously comes naturally to her. In conversation, her personality sparkles to the point where, if she wasn\u2019t a comic, you\u2019d wonder \u201cWhy isn\u2019t she a comic?\u201d<\/p>\n

In her professional career\u2014”getting paid for it”\u2014she has performed at churches, birthdays, family and class reunions, even a wedding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done everything but a funeral,\u201d she smiles.<\/p>\n

She also has written a comic play, Bright Star: Not Your Ordinary Nursing Home,<\/em> that has been performed at the Chattanooga Theatre Center.<\/p>\n

Most of her humor comes through two characters she\u2019s created\u2014Miss Poinsettia and Shrop the Cop. Shrop hands out citations at church for such violations as bad breath, praying too loud and people who can\u2019t sing. \u201cEvery noise ain\u2019t joyful,\u201d Shropshire says.<\/p>\n

Miss Poinsettia, meanwhile, is \u201cmore worldly but still edgy, she explains.<\/p>\n

Shropshire\u2019s ability to be funny started with the imaginary friends she had as a child, \u201cwell beyond the time that you should have imaginary friends,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

She figured her future was pursuing comedy in New York or Los Angeles. Then she met her husband Daniel, who works in UTC Housing and Resident Life.<\/p>\n
