The video will allow other students to watch the experiment since currently, classes are taught only online.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Setting up laboratory experiments to be shown online can be tough for organic chemistry courses but, in some ways, Dominique Belanger considers herself lucky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad that I don\u2019t have to learn how to teach sculpture online,\u201d she said, laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Belanger is in charge of the organic chemistry program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, so it\u2019s her responsibility to arrange lab work for students taking the courses. Only now, since classes have gone online during the coronavirus crisis, students must understand the experiments without actually being in the labs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a dilemma faced by several UTC professors whose courses include weekly or biweekly labs. How do you set up hands-on work when students can\u2019t get their hands on it?<\/p>\n<p>Some have turned to video to be placed online. Belanger is taping her teaching assistant, Allycia Lee, as she conducts experiments. Since videographers were standing behind the cameras, he used them as pseudo-students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith somebody to sort of talk to, I didn\u2019t feel like it was that different an experience or \u2018That was weird,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just getting used to it as much as anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While not getting any feedback from students is a bit \u201codd,\u201d he continued, the hardest part may be breaking the classroom into pieces that students can watch one at a time instead of sitting in front of computer monitor for an entire class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easier on the students if they get things in smaller chunks,\u201d he said. \u201cOne lecture is three videos right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Belanger\u2019s organic chemistry labs, putting zoology labs on video won\u2019t work, he says, because they involve dissecting animals. The class was going to start cat dissections before classes went online, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a discovery process,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen you dissect something, you have to go in and explore with your hands and figure out what you\u2019re looking at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Gaudin said, he\u2019ll give students some online exercises and handouts so \u201cthey can think a little bit about cat anatomy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Setting up laboratory experiments to be shown online can be tough for organic chemistry courses but, in some ways, Dominique Belanger considers herself lucky. \u201cI\u2019m glad that I don\u2019t have to learn how to teach sculpture online,\u201d she said, laughing.
