In spring semester 2020, students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga earned many impressive national and international scholarships, including such well-known ones as the J. William Fulbright U.S. Scholar, Japanese Exchange and Teaching,\u00a0Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program<\/span>\u00a0and the Knight-Hennessy Scholar. Several were the first UTC students to ever be awarded such prestigious\u00a0<\/span>scholarships\u00a0or were the first in many years;\u00a0<\/span>50 years in one case.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hannah Horton,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0a political science\u00a0major, was selected as a\u00a0<\/span>J. William Fulbright U.S. Student Scholar<\/span><\/a>, marking the second year in a row that a UTC student from the UTC\u00a0Honors College earned the award. In 2019, Honors College student\u00a0Simone Edwards<\/strong>\u00a0won the Fulbright scholarship, the first UTC graduate to win the honor in 50 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finance majors Stephen Zurlo<\/strong> and Casey Szatkowski<\/strong> won the\u00a0<\/span>national\u00a0<\/span>Equity Research Report College Challenge,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0an award sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Co, NASDAQ, Tribune Publishing and several other organizations.\u00a0The Challenge is a competition based on research of emerging-growth companies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caroline Donsbach<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0was recently awarded a scholarship from the\u00a0<\/span>American Occupational Therapy Foundation,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the first UTC student to receive a scholarship from the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0A<\/strong><\/span>shwyn Sam,<\/strong>\u00a0a double major in mechanical engineering and mathematics and an Innovations in Honors student, is the first UTC student to be named a\u00a0<\/span>Knight-Hennessy Scholar<\/span><\/a>, which completely pays for three years of post-graduate study at Stanford University. The award received over 6,000 applicants, and Sam was one of 83 to be selected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Ximena Leon<\/span><\/strong> and\u00a0Dell Zimmerman<\/strong>\u00a0were named 2020 Goldwater Scholars by the\u00a0Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and are the first UTC students to be chosen for the scholarship since 2008, one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship for students studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics in the United States. Ximena, a biology major, and Dell, a chemical engineering major, are both Innovations in Honors students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Mae Stuart,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>a Brock Scholar and Innovation in Honors alumnae, has been selected for a\u00a0<\/span>MITRA scholarship<\/span><\/a>. The MITRA program is a master\u2019s program that studies migratory phenomena on an international scale. A double major in political science and humanities with a French minor, Stuart was a\u00a0<\/span>Gilman Scholar to France<\/span><\/a>\u00a0while at UTC.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Tiffany Harvey<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ximena Leon<\/strong>\u00a0were offered positions in the 2020\u00a0<\/span>Amgen Scholars<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Program.\u00a0They are the first UTC students to be offered positions at their respective institutions: Harvey to the\u00a0<\/span>Stanford Summer Research Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(SSRP)-Amgen at Stanford University, Leon to Amgen\u00a0<\/span>Yale University BioMed Research Program.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Itzel Guzman Hernandez,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>an Innovations in Honors alumnus who received her degree in biology in December, has been accepted to an Assistant Language Teacher position in the\u00a0<\/span>Japan Exchange and Teaching<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(JET) Program, the only teaching exchange program managed by the Japanese government. Itzel is not UTC\u2019s first JET recipient, but she is the first in about four years to receive an offer to the program.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Audrey Lawson, <\/span><\/strong>a junior political science major, is the first UTC student to be offered to participate in the\u00a0Gilman Scholar on the Semester-at-Sea<\/span><\/a>\u00a0program, a study abroad learning opportunity. After starting her studies, however, she was required to return to the U.S. early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Two Electrical Engineering students received\u00a0<\/span>Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers\u2019 Power and Energy Society<\/span><\/a>\u00a0scholarships this year.\u00a0Tim Mannon<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Boyd\u00a0<\/strong>were among the 125 recipients selected from a list of 326 applicants given the award, which l0oks for \u201c<\/span>high achievers with strong GPAs with distinctive extracurricular commitments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lakelyn Bouldin,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>a member of the Mocs women\u2019s basketball team, was selected as the recipient of the 2020\u00a0<\/span>William V. Moore Scholarship,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0an award from the Southern Conference to help with postgraduate education expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Kirsty Beckwith,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0a member of the Mocs women\u2019s golf team, was selected as the recipient of the 2020\u00a0<\/span>Insurance Office of America Scholarship<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from the Southern Conference to help with postgraduate education expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n
