Troubadours all have Parkinson’s disease and are under the direction of Katie Elverd, director of UTC’s music therapy program.

Tennessee’s first public university program of its kind prescribes music as medicine. The much-anticipated music therapy major launched at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in fall 2019 and already has surpassed enrollment goals.

Chattanooga native Katherine Goforth Elverd—“Katie” or “Professor Goforth” to her colleagues and students— returned to Chattanooga after working as a practicing music therapy clinician in pediatric settings and teaching music therapy at the university level.

Goforth now serves as director of the music therapy program. She was instrumental in bringing the new area of study to UTC, but the path to get here wasn’t an easy one. Serious talks began when Goforth and Erlanger Hospital Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing Jed Mescon met with leaders in UTC’s Department of Performing Arts to explore collaborating for a potential program.

Goforth’s argument for music therapy and data proving its community impact so impressed UTC Head of Performing Arts Stuart Benkert that he immediately scheduled a second meeting with university administrators.

“Before the presentation was even over, Gerald Ainsworth, the provost at the time, looked at me and said, ‘We need this program, make it happen,’ so I said, ‘Yes sir,’” Benkert explains.

Goforth says clinical music therapy has a strong presence in Nashville, but she believes there’s a great need for it locally. Before the undergraduate music therapy program came to UTC, the closest public program was at the University of Georgia, “so we were losing students to a neighboring state,” she adds.

In the community

The program is built for a diverse student population with various educational backgrounds. Students can enter as first-time freshmen, transfer into the program or enter it after earning another bachelor’s degree in a complementary discipline such as nursing, special education or music education, psychology or social work, to name a few.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="197" data-attachment-id="31810" data-permalink="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/2020/05/music-as-medicine/music-therapy-20/" data-orig-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2.jpg" data-orig-size="1200,787" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.8","credit":"Angela Foster","camera":"NIKON Z 6","caption":"Katie Elverd's Music Therapy program, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 in Cadek Hall.","created_timestamp":"1579517958","copyright":"University of Tennessee at Chattanooga","focal_length":"38","iso":"2500","shutter_speed":"0.008","title":"Music Therapy-20","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Music Therapy-20" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Kennedi Walz, left, participates in music therapy class Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 in Cadek Hall.</p>
" data-large-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-1024x672.jpg" class="size-medium wp-image-31810" src="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-300x197.jpg" alt="" style="max-width: 100%;"style="max-width: 100%;" srcset="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-300x197.jpg 300w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-1024x672.jpg 1024w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-768x504.jpg 768w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-580x380.jpg 580w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-610x400.jpg 610w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-250x164.jpg 250w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2-600x394.jpg 600w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Music-Therapy-20-1753-2.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />
Kennedi Walz, left, participates in music therapy class Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 in Cadek Hall.

Kennedi Walz would have been one of those forced to look elsewhere. The Manchester, Tennessee native took advantage of Tennessee Promise by earning an associate’s degree in music from Chattanooga State Community College, but she always had her sights set on music therapy. Many assume if a musician is brought into a space where music is not normally found—someone playing piano in a hospital lobby or a guitarist visiting patient rooms—that this is music therapy, but it’s not. These are examples of “music enrichment,” Goforth says.

“We’re not going in and providing music that we want to provide; we’re not going in and bringing instruments that we want to provide; we’re bringing instruments and repertoire that will effectively target the non-musical goals of the client that we are working with,” she says.

As an example, she describes visiting a child who is in pain in a hospital’s intensive care unit.

“I would approach that situation by first assessing the pain level on a scale of one to 10, then assess their heart rate, respiration rate, overall oxygen saturation levels. Because, based on my education and knowledge, I know how music affects all of those different parameters,” she explains.

“I would match the music to the child’s behavioral responses. So if their heart rate is up, if they’re moaning or grimacing, if they’re crying, I’m going to match my tempo. I’m going to match the volume of my guitar and my voice to alternate the focus of their attention, to get their brain off the pain and onto the music. Then I’m going to shape that musical experience to get them to a more relaxed state.”

Becoming an advocate

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="210" height="300" data-attachment-id="31808" data-permalink="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/2020/05/music-as-medicine/martha-summa-chadwick-20/" data-orig-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2.jpg" data-orig-size="841,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.5","credit":"Angela Foster","camera":"NIKON Z 6","caption":"Martha Summa Chadwick Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 in Cadek Hall.","created_timestamp":"1580906537","copyright":"University of Tennessee at Chattanooga","focal_length":"70","iso":"800","shutter_speed":"0.005","title":"Martha Summa Chadwick-20","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Martha Summa Chadwick-20" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Martha Summa-Chadwick </p>
" data-large-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-718x1024.jpg" class="size-medium wp-image-31808" src="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-210x300.jpg" alt="" style="max-width: 100%;"style="max-width: 100%;" srcset="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-210x300.jpg 210w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-718x1024.jpg 718w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-768x1096.jpg 768w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-580x828.jpg 580w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-610x870.jpg 610w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-140x200.jpg 140w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2-280x400.jpg 280w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2020/05/Martha-Summa-Chadwick-20-771-2.jpg 841w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px" />
Martha Summa-Chadwick ’96

UTC alumna Martha Summa-Chadwick has a doctorate of musical arts and, as a scholar, has studied, practiced and advocated for music therapy for years.
