Professor Emeritus Roland Carter wrote an arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” several decades ago.<\/p><\/div>\n

According to news reports, the National Football League may play \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing,\u201d the Black National Anthem, to start the first week of games in the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

Roland Carter isn\u2019t all that impressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite honestly, I don\u2019t think much of it due to the lack of knowledge about the piece,\u201d says Carter, professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga who wrote an arrangement of the song 50 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf people don\u2019t know it, they don\u2019t know the words. To play the music is one thing, but it\u2019s about the text and the words. So that becomes the important part for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d was originally a poem written in 1900 by\u00a0James Weldon Johnson to honor the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. Five years later, his brother J. Rosamond Johnson,\u00a0put it to music. The NAACP designated it as the Black National Anthem in 1919, citing it as a message of faith and freedom.<\/p>\n

The connection of the song and the NFL began after nationwide protests in June denounced systemic racism. In a statement, the NFL said: “This is a time of self-reflection for all\u2014the NFL is no exception. We stand with the black community because Black Lives Matter.”<\/p>\n

\u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d is seen as an element of that support. It would be played prior to \u201cThe Star Spangled Banner\u201d for Week One of the NFL\u00a0season, which begins in September, although the coronavirus could push that back or cancel the season entirely.<\/p>\n

The fact that the song will be a one-time thing irritates Carter, who spent 23 years at UTC, including time as head of the Department of Music.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re going to do it, then do it. But you\u2019re going to do it for one game?\u201d asked Carter.<\/p>\n

Internationally, Carter is revered as a composer, musician, conductor, arranger, teacher, scholar and an expert in African American hymns and spirituals. His arrangements have been performed worldwide, and his\u00a0resume is stuffed with national and international awards.<\/p>\n

When writing his own arrangement of \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing,\u201d he intended it to be inclusive for anyone and everyone, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s\u00a0why I did my arrangement, so the song could be embraced by all people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As a student at Orchard Knob Elementary school in the late 1940s and early \u201950s, he remembers \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d as a staple of every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sang it every morning along with \u201cMy Country \u2019Tis of Thee.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

If \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d is played at NFL games, Carter said he wants to see how the crowd responds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m more interested in how people react more than anything else in hearing the song,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve seen people even in the games now that don\u2019t even take their hats off for \u2018\u201cThe Star Spangled Banner.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a very patriotic person. I get a special feeling for standing, for country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
