Never has.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-year-old isn\u2019t mute, although his vocabulary is limited. As a special-needs teenager, he mostly speaks in single words at a time.<\/p>\n<p>But he loves to drum with his bare hands.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, he began working with the music therapy program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a student in the newly created\u00a0UTC Music Therapy Telehealth Groups for Children with Special Needs. He pounds drums, rattles egg-shaped shakers filled with beans, jingles a handheld strip of small bells and twirls an orange scarf with gusto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loves it,\u201d said his mom, Mindy. \u201cHe&#8217;s like, \u2018music therapy\u2019 and \u2018drum,\u2019 and I&#8217;m like, \u2018Yes, we&#8217;re going to go downstairs.\u2019 Because, I mean, even though he&#8217;s nonverbal, he says basically single words. And so you can tell when he&#8217;s happy and you can tell when he\u2019s sad, but he&#8217;s like, \u2018drum, drum, drum.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Telehealth focuses on 10 special-needs kids and teens, giving them instruments to play while music therapy students guide them. Their homes range from North Georgia to Maryville, Tenn., so sessions take place using the Zoom computer program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way they&#8217;re able to do what we&#8217;re doing in just 30 minutes while they\u2019re 90 minutes away, and they&#8217;re going to be successful and they&#8217;re going to get the full therapeutic experience,\u201d said Katie Goforth Elverd, who created the music therapy program at UTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of what makes music therapy really successful is that the tools that are being utilized, a.k.a., the music<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">,<\/span>\u00a0is highly motivating and it intrinsically drives those behaviors that we don&#8217;t see outside of music therapy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>For every session, three UTC music therapy students take lead, talking to the kids\u2014\u2014the official word is \u201cclients\u201d\u2014getting them to drum fast and slow, to shake tambourines, to wave colorful scarves around their heads. Most importantly, though, the clients are engaged in the lessons, listening to instructions and talking, however limited, with the student-teachers.\u00a0\u201cNice job!\u201d and \u201cThumbs up!\u201d are frequent phrases.<\/p>\n<p>As a music therapy major, Kennedi Walz said dealing with the special-needs kids and teen gives them an extra \u201ctrick in our bag\u00a0\u00a0for later on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had this opportunity and not many people have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also fun, said the UTC students, which include Seth Moulton and Mary Record.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the process is asking questions such as \u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite thing to do?\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s your best friend?\u201d When the clients answer, even if it\u2019s only a single word such as \u201cburgers,\u201d \u201cketchup\u201d and \u201cgreen,\u201d that word is used as a lyric in an upcoming song.<\/p>\n<p>Other lyrics include \u201cI wanna see you be brave,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be the best day of my life\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s time to say \u2018hello.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mindy is surprised at how engaged Max gets during his\u00a0classes,\u00a0including the question-asking parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girl was asking Max, \u2018What do you want to talk about Max?\u2019 And I thought, \u2018He&#8217;s nonverbal. I don&#8217;t know what he&#8217;s going to say or if he is going to say anything. But then she had pictures. So she had a picture of a cheeseburger. He loves food. So he was like, \u2018Cheeseburger.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo even though he is not able to have a full conversation, he still was able to be a part of the song,\u201d Mindy said. \u201cAnd she made this verse about cheeseburgers. She asked, \u2018What do you like to eat in your cheeseburgers?\u2019 And he said, \u201cketchup.\u2019 And so she made this whole verse for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to making music, the kids all love playing the drums, a good way to improve their skills on several different levels, Elverd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do more structured drumming activities that not only are working on the motor skills that we have established as a\u00a0goal, but also working on the cognitive piece, following directions and playing when I&#8217;m told or modeling or imitating different rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s always an opportunity for the kids in the group to just make music however they want to. They can improvise on the drums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this is the Telehealth program\u2019s first go-round, the hope is to make it an ongoing effort, not just for the kids\u2014although that is its prime aim\u2014but also for the music therapy students to accumulate the hours they need in real-world practice to graduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the parents have even asked, \u2018Are you going to continue to do this?\u2019\u201d Elverd said. \u201cWe love this.
