Fall closing session with Jamie Washington.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Uncomfortable conversations. Vulnerability. Honesty. Open minds.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the recipe for the annual MOC\u2014Moving Our Campus\u2014Forward diversity and inclusion conference at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.<\/p>\n<p>The conference, now in its fourth year, returned Wednesday, Sept. 16, and continues this year through October and into November.<\/p>\n<p>All MOC Forward events are centered on one theme: Moving forward together to dismantle racism. The virtual series includes guest speakers and panel discussions throughout the fall and spring semesters. All events are virtual.<\/p>\n<p>The next session, \u201cMoving Forward Together: Tackling Micro-Aggressions and Implicit Bias,\u201d is led by guest speaker Jamie Washington. It takes place Monday, Oct. 12 from noon-1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Named a Top Ten Global Diversity consultant by\u00a0<em>The Economist,<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonconsultinggroup.net\/jamie-washington\">Washington<\/a> has led efforts and initiatives to promote and advance diversity and inclusion at institutions across the world for more than 30 years. He is president and co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sjti.org\/\">Social Justice Training Institute.<\/a> He also is president and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonconsultinggroup.net\/home\">Washington Consulting Group<\/a>; Offer is vice president of the group.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks for MOC Forward\u2019s kickoff, Chancellor Steve Angle reminded campus that embracing diversity, equity and inclusion every day is a critical part of the University. UTC must prepare students to relate to and work with people who are different than them.<\/p>\n<p>This year a storm of tensions has exposed inequities that for too many were hiding under the surface. UTC recognizes the need to step up, but the work won\u2019t be easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSystemic racism has been a part of our society for centuries, and now is the time to say we will not sit idly by and see lives wasted,\u201d Angle said. \u201cWe won&#8217;t tolerate silence and inaction. So, to dismantle racism, we must have difficult and uncomfortable conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington reiterated this idea as he discussed what dismantling racism looks like.
