The Quadrangle chapter of Mortar Board was honored for its excellence at the 2010 Mortar Board National Conference, held in Chicago.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe honor means a great deal to our chapter, as it recognizes the chapter’s growing influence on campus. The Golden Torch Award reflects a surpassing dedication to scholarship, leadership, and service, which are the cardinal virtues of Mortar Board,\u201d said Kent Dickson, UTC chapter president.<\/p>\n
Dickson said the honor is important to the UTC chapter because it is an outside, unbiased voice within the national organization that acknowledges the chapter\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n
The Quadrangle Chapter was selected to receive the award through a formal application process that included a summary of chapter activities and member involvement.<\/p>\n
\u201cAmong the activities for which we were recognized were bi-weekly reading and literacy promotion programs at the Chambliss Children’s Home, the Trick-or-Can food drive for the Chattanooga Food Bank, and work with various campus organizations as part of community events like Homecoming and Relay for Life,\u201d said Dickson.<\/p>\n
The group was one of just 22 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, presented to outstanding chapters that exceed the minimum standards, accomplishing significant achievements in chapter management and contributing meaningful service to their institutions.<\/p>\n
Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 228 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Quadrangle chapter at UTC was chartered in 1953 and currently has 47 members.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
