The first step is, remember your purpose for being at UTC is to obtain an education. And that is what you should always keep in the forefront of your mind for what your purpose at the institution truly needs to be,” said Dr. Pamela Ross, the 2020 UTC Legends and Leaders Distinguished Alumni recipient and the first African American graduate of the Brock Scholars program.

“The second step is to be open to everything that you may have the opportunity to experience there,” she continued. “You all are familiar with the term ‘implicit bias.’ So as African American students, we are very tuned in and honed in on that concept. We know what it means when other people hold it for us or in our experience. We know what it means for people to be surprised at how articulate we are, or we know what it means for people to assume that we have certain abilities just based on the color of our skin.

“At the same time, while we’re aware and we’re sensitive that these implicit biases exist, keep in mind that we each hold our own implicit bias. So keep yourself open to meeting new people. You could make assumptions about people of other ethnicities or other genders or other people who are different from you. You can just end up making incorrect assumptions because of your own implicit bias, and you limit your experience and you limit your opportunity for fitting in.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="225" height="300" data-attachment-id="35529" data-permalink="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/2021/02/black-alumni-voices/rosalynn-phillips/" data-orig-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips.jpg" data-orig-size="300,400" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Rosalynn Phillips" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips.jpg" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-35529" src="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips-225x300.jpg" alt="" style="max-width: 100%;"style="max-width: 100%;" srcset="https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips-225x300.jpg 225w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips-150x200.jpg 150w, https://blogarchive.utc.edu/news/files/2021/02/Rosalynn-Phillips.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" />Rosalynn Phillips, ’99 (human services management)

Contracts Manager

Thermo Fisher Scientific

Nashville

“A lot of degrees are not going to be a straight path,” said Rosalynn Phillips, who—in her student days—planned on working in the nonprofit area.
