Charlie Mix is director of the UTC Geographic Information System (GIS) and <a href=\"https:\/\/new.utc.edu\/research\/research-and-sponsored-programs\/interdisciplinary-geospatial-technology-lab\/igtlab-faculty-and-staff\">Interdisciplinary Geospatial Lab<\/a> (IGT), which designed the Cradle of Southern Appalachia map.<\/p>\n<p>The award-winning map can be found\u00a0 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriveregionalpartnership.org\/projects\/cradle-of-southern-appalachia\">Thrive Regional Partnership<\/a> website and is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriveregionalpartnership.org\/projects\/cradle-of-southern-appalachia\">Cradle of Southern Appalachia<\/a> master plan, which was\u00a0 designed collaboratively by Thrive and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thriveregionalpartnership.org\/natural-treasures\">Natural Treasures Alliance.<\/a> It identifies seven specific landscapes in the region that need protection<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouthern Appalachia is among the most biodiverse areas in North America, but only 15% is protected. It\u2019s the least-protected with the most biodiversity in North America,\u201d Mix has said.<\/p>\n<p>The $5.25 million slated for the Southeast Tennessee region is part of an $18-million effort by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openspaceinstitute.org\/\">Open Space Institute<\/a>. Founded in 1974, the institute focuses on environmental conservation efforts in the eastern United States.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openspaceinstitute.org\/funds\/appalachian-landscapes-protection-fund\">Appalachian Landscapes Protection Fund<\/a>, its ultimate goal is to conserve 50,000 acres along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains which, along with Southeast Tennessee region, includes the Middle-Atlantic and Northern Appalachians, home of the world\u2019s largest broadleaf forest.
