The UTC Cress Gallery of Art begins the new year with a student exhibition and the rescheduled opening of a student\/faculty project space on Tuesday, January 18. The dates for the juried student exhibition are January 18 – January 31.<\/p>\n
The Cress Gallery of Art welcomes The UTC Department of Art 2011 Juried Student Exhibition. This exhibition showcases work by the UTC Department of Art’s current student majors enrolled at all levels of its professional curricula. Selected each year by an independent arts professional from outside the Chattanooga area, the exhibition provides a fresh perspective upon the excellence of the endeavors and studio production of the Department’s student artists. This year’s exhibition includes painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, design, artist books, photography, and video; and\u00a0continues the strong tradition of recent years with a presentation of work that is solidly based in concept, execution, and resolution.<\/p>\n
Hope Hilton was the juror of this year\u2019s exhibition. Hilton is an artist, designer, curator, writer, and publisher from Athens, Tennessee. \u201cMy time spent in the Cress Gallery of UTC was truly inspiring,\u201d Hilton said. \u201cThe strength I see in this program is the incredible attention paid to craft combined with concept. It is incredible to see work that generates so much curiosity and emotion.\u201d She will present a public lecture about her work and contemporary practice on January 25, 2011 in UTC Fine Arts Center, Room 356. Hilton will continue to be on campus January 25 and 26 for activities with students.<\/p>\n
Hours of the Cress Gallery of Arts are 9:30 a.m. \u2013 7:30 p.m. weekdays; 1 p.m. \u2013 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. An opening public reception and awards presentation will be Tuesday, January 18 at 5 p.m. \u2013 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Apothecary, the recently established project space jointly administered by UTC Department of Art students and faculty will also open on January 18. Located on the corner of McCallie Ave. at Palmetto Street, this space will feature an exhibition of work by UTC Art alumnus and University of Dayton associate professor of art, Jeffrey Cortland Jones, titled “Told You So.” The opening public reception at Apothecary is on Tuesday, January 18 from 6 p.m. \u2013 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
