Seniors in the greater Chattanooga area are invited to join Elderscholars and engage in academic, social and cultural experiences on the UTC campus. Elderscholars plan interesting, entertaining and useful session programs and more, according to President Bob Graham.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to encourage everyone 55 and older to participate in Elderscholar events. It is a means to improve quality of life, and participants provide a built-in base of community volunteers,\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n

Graham and Vice Presidents Sharon McIntosh and Ray Millard would like to increase membership and attendance at the monthly meetings. The group promotes free UTC audit programs for those 60 and better, and Elderscholars members are in the process of scheduling a variety of speakers.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jim Scales, Superintendent of Schools for the Hamilton County Department of Education, will speak to the group on Tuesday, October 9, in the Ocoee Room of the UTC University Center.<\/p>\n

Scales said in a recent interview with Commercial Network Magazine<\/em> that he encourages residents, parents, business leaders and elected officials to become involved in their local schools. \u201cSupporting education does not have to mean writing a check,\u201d Scales said. \u201cCommunity members and leaders can get involved by reading to students, volunteering in the classroom, helping to keep our school property groomed, donating supplies and other needed items or mentoring students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hour-long presentation will include an opportunity for questions and answers.<\/p>\n
