{"id":45889,"date":"2022-10-07T17:15:02","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T21:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=45889"},"modified":"2022-10-13T09:46:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T13:46:09","slug":"rocket-mocs-preparing-for-another-liftoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/rocket-mocs-preparing-for-another-liftoff\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocket Mocs preparing for another liftoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"Rocket Mocs Advance in Competition\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OzckXWSHDYU?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Rocket Mocs have launched into a national competition for the fifth consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p>In early October, the team\u2014comprised of students in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Engineering and Computer Science\u2014learned of its acceptance into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/marshall\/news\/releases\/2022\/nasa-announces-teams-for-the-2023-student-launch-challenge.html\">2023 Student Launch Challenge<\/a>. The NASA-sponsored yearly competition calls for student teams to create, construct and launch a high-powered amateur rocket and scientific payload to an altitude of between 4,000 and 6,000 feet.<\/p>\n<p>The UTC organization is one of 51 university-level teams moving forward in the competition. The nine-month-long challenge will culminate with an on-site launch event near NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, in April.<\/p>\n<p>Just days after receiving the good news, team members began building their certification rockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is an exercise for these students to learn how to build rockets. This is their first shot at understanding what it means to build and be successful,\u201d explained Trevor Elliott, UC Foundation associate professor of mechanical engineering and the Rocket Mocs\u2019 faculty advisor.<\/p>\n<p>Elliott said the team is comprised of mechanical engineering students in his senior design class\u2014all in the first semester of a two-semester sequence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time they have been involved in a competition with a rocket,\u201d he said. \u201cTo go through this process, they have to understand the stability of a rocket. They have to understand construction kit techniques. They have to understand materials and how all that plays together so they can design a cohesive rocket that will be safe to fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team lead is Mason Russell, a native of Alpharetta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something you hear about as a little kid and you\u2019re like, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s crazy,\u2019\u201d Russell said. \u201cWhen (Elliott) brought up NASA as our senior project, all of a sudden, that dream that you have as a little kid becomes an opportunity that\u2019s right there in front of your face\u2014and it comes with a lot of nerves and stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you take a step back and see the reality of this, you\u2019re like, \u2018Wow, we\u2019re competing in a NASA competition,\u2019 and that\u2019s really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As team lead, Russell said he will oversee everything going on throughout the process, starting with the 80-page proposal submitted for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was longer than any report we\u2019ve done,\u201d he said with a laugh, \u201cand that\u2019s just the start of it. The reports only get bigger from there, and that comes with a lot of data and a lot of experience. There\u2019s a learning curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are many different components in the building of the rockets, such as airframe, payload, avionics, an integrated camera system that takes photos autonomously, and safety.<\/p>\n<p>Russell knows a thing or two about being part of a team. Juliet, Tennessee, explained that avionics are the electrical components of the rockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the payload system, we have to connect a motor to the recovery system, to the camera, that will take pictures and send them to our computer system. That\u2019s going to be in the rocket as well,\u201d she said. \u201cThose are all the electrical components and we have to get those wired properly. We have to make sure they\u2019re all powered properly and that backup batteries are also on board in case some fail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the main electrical components is called the altimeter, which will tell the parachute when to deploy so the rocket comes down at a safe speed and doesn\u2019t become a missile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McSpadden called it \u201ccrazy\u201d that she\u2019s now participating in a competition of this type, saying, \u201cI did not expect to be where I am right now, but I\u2019m excited for what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really eager to learn everything I can from this,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t have the biggest electronics background, so I\u2019m learning as much as I can so we can produce the best rocket for our team and a rocket suitable to win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, this will open future opportunities that I haven\u2019t exactly thought of yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other team members are Seth De Beauclair (assistant team lead\/verification officer), Alec Blade (safety officer\/payload lead), Matthew Neff (airframe lead), Logan Friday (recovery lead), Benjiman Holcombe, Elijah Schmiesing-Joyce, Gabriel Waters, LaShawn Stutz and Mat Ormaza.<\/p>\n<p>The Rocket Mocs have a storied history. In 2018, they earned the No. 1 ranking in the U.S., launching a rocket to 11,563 feet\u2014a figure that helped them win the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space Rocketry Contest.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, they <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/worldwide-win-spells-relief-for-hard-working-rocket-team\/\">launched a rocket a world-record 17,267 feet<\/a>, which was confirmed by the Tripoli Rocketry Association\u2014a nonprofit that focuses on amateur rocketry.
