It has grown so <\/span><span class=\"s3\">prominent<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">that <\/span><span class=\"s3\">c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">omputer science experts<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> from all over the world<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">attended\u2014either in person or virtually\u2014a recent conference <\/span><span class=\"s3\">hosted by the center<\/span><span class=\"s3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">From Sept. 2<\/span><span class=\"s3\">6<\/span><span class=\"s3\">-30<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">105 researchers<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> from the U.S., Canada,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> France, Brazil, Japan, Spain, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Australia<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and Germany<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2014among others<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2014participated in the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">SimCenter<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> conference. They <\/span><span class=\"s3\">discussed the future of high-<\/span><span class=\"s3\">performance<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> computing<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, <\/span><span class=\"s3\">also known as supercomputing<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, at the <\/span><span class=\"s3\">combined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openmp.org\/events\/iwomp-2022\/\"><span class=\"s4\">International Workshop<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> on OpenMP<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/eurompiusa2022\"><span class=\"s6\">EuroMPI USA<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s7\"> an<\/span><span class=\"s7\">d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi-forum.org\/\"><span class=\"s6\">The <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MPI Forum<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s7\">.<\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s7\">\u201cPart of our whole center<\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s7\">s mission is high-performance computing. <\/span><span class=\"s7\">So<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> for our 20th anniversary, we bid on hosting them,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s5\">said Dr. Anthony Skjellum, director of the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">SimCenter<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, housed in the <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Multi-Disciplinary Research Building on Martin Luther King Boulevard<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s5\">F<\/span><span class=\"s5\">olks came here to talk about how they build the infrastructure<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s5\">or the plumbing<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s5\">of high-performance computing programming<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">Along with working on an international scale, the SimCenter also <\/span><span class=\"s3\">provides support for<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> computer science <\/span><span class=\"s3\">students<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> at UTC. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">After completing their research with help from SimCenter technology, s<\/span><span class=\"s3\">tudents have landed jobs at national research labs such as Oak Ridge in Tennessee<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">and<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> Los Alamos in New Mexico<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s3\">and companies such as Intel and SpaceX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201cThey\u2019re taking the knowledge we provide them and taking it into jobs in one of the national labs, for example. And that pipeline<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s continuing,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Skjellum <\/span><span class=\"s5\">said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">Dr. James Newman, head of the UTC Department of Mechanical Engineering, said the SimCenter&#8217;s technology gives students the opportunity to work with equipment now used worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">&#8220;These are the same software and modern computing environments employed in many industrial and government laboratories,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Training and experience such as that provided by the SimCenter is a rarity in academia, giving UTC students an advantage in the job market.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s5\">Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science Daniel Pack said the SimCenter \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s5\">has provided both faculty and students at the College of Engineering and Computer Science with unmatched computational resources to <\/span><span class=\"s5\">enable them to conduct a variety of research in health, manufacturing, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">energy<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and military applications<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201cThe resources offered by the center will continue to foster interdisciplinary research across disciplines at UTC<\/span><span class=\"s5\">,\u201d he said<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">These days, high-performance computing <\/span><span class=\"s3\">is needed for everything from drug discoveries to hurricane prediction to national security systems for the U.S. government.<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">At this point, the number of <\/span><span class=\"s3\">calculations <\/span><span class=\"s3\">supercomputers can perform <\/span><span class=\"s3\">in one second <\/span><span class=\"s3\">is <\/span><span class=\"s3\">one<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> quintillion<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u2014<\/span><span class=\"s3\">or <\/span><span class=\"s3\">10 with 18 zeroes behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201cThe systems have gotten much more complicated, so we have to go with that,\u201d Skjellum said. \u201cThere<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> are<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> lots of lessons learned with new ideas, things that go wrong.
