{"id":472,"date":"2007-11-12T10:58:45","date_gmt":"2007-11-12T15:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.utc.edu\/Administration\/UniversityRelations\/news\/2007\/11\/12\/symposium-held-on-the-19th-century-press-the-civil-war-and-free-expression\/"},"modified":"2007-11-12T10:58:45","modified_gmt":"2007-11-12T15:58:45","slug":"symposium-held-on-the-19th-century-press-the-civil-war-and-free-expression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2007\/11\/symposium-held-on-the-19th-century-press-the-civil-war-and-free-expression\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium held on the 19th Century Press, The Civil War, and Free Expression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Symposium on the 19th Century Press, The Civil War, and Free Expression ended Saturday with a tour of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield led by National Park Historian Jim Ogden.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium featured presentations of selected papers that deal with U.S. mass media of the 19th century, the Civil War in fiction and history, images of race and gender in the 19th century press, presidents and the 19th century press, and sensationalism and crime in 19th century newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn interesting development for the conference over the last few years is the increasing presence of \u2018mainstream\u2019 historians,\u201d said Dr. Kit Rushing, head of the Department of Communication, who works with Dr. David Sachsman, George R.
