Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the third consecutive year, a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student has been selected for a summer research internship with a Canadian university.<\/p>\n<p>Junior Lake Best, a Brock Scholar and communication major at UTC, was accepted into the Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink program\u2014an international education experience under the Fulbright umbrella for U.S. students interested in traveling to Canada to undertake advanced research projects in their areas of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Best, whose interests include photography, film and TV, has been matched with a project being conducted by University of Winnipeg Professor Pauline Greenhill titled \u201cTransforming Wonder: Justice in Old and New Fairy-Tale Media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis opportunity was made for Lake,\u201d said Leslie Pusey, director of the UTC Office of National Scholarships. \u201cAs a communication major, Lake really thinks about other people, about storytelling and how to tell other people\u2019s stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The internship will begin in May and serve as Best\u2019s first excursion to Canada and initial study abroad experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something I really wanted to do. It\u2019s very research-based and we\u2019re going to learn about concepts,\u201d said Best, a 2020 graduate of Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, Tennessee. \u201cThis opportunity is a weird balance of it\u2019s going to be the farthest I\u2019ve gone just by myself without my family and the opportunity to be on my own and directly interact, make connections, learn, grow, observe and gain knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019re not working, we\u2019re encouraged to be like, \u2018You are a college student having this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Go into the city, explore and go find things.\u2019 To have that opportunity built in is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best, who explained that Greenhill\u2019s research examines how fairy tales are told and retold in different media formats, has already participated in an \u201cabsolutely amazing\u201d initial interview with the professor.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next few months before beginning the internship, Best plans to brush up on Greenhill\u2019s work \u201cto see what research she has already done. What can I learn from it? What other ideas will come to mind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairy-tale media is one of the first things that you encounter in terms of media. It\u2019s fairy tales, like children\u2019s stories,\u201d Best said. \u201cSo there\u2019s this interesting parallel that I\u2019ve noticed rising in media where we\u2019re looking at fairy tales. One of the first things you see are those lessons, those stories, those happily ever afters that you aspire to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of what media has created is very much influenced by the director, the producer, the people working in the crew, the actors creating so much of the message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Best\u2019s future plans are admittedly a work in progress, the upcoming research experience could go a long way to charting a course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, I don\u2019t know which direction I want to go,\u201d Best said, \u201cbut as I was doing the application, I was like, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be cool if I get this internship and then this internship teaches me a direction I could go after college?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I\u2019ll be starting this journey. There are a lot of different avenues that I can go down, so having this opportunity is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Lola Oke became the first UTC student to be accepted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulbright.ca\/programs\/undergraduate-students\/fulbright-canada-mitacs-globalink-program\"><strong>Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink program<\/strong><\/a>. Last year, Emma Sprayberry and Christine Rukeyser spent their summers in Canada participating in advanced research projects in their respective areas of interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve started a Canadian pipeline,\u201d Pusey said, \u201cand we\u2019ve produced some pretty fabulous students who want to expand their horizons and participate in an international experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pusey said it\u2019s never too early for students to consider applying for competitive national scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf students are interested in these international research opportunities, I\u2019d love to work with them,\u201d Pusey said. \u201cThis one in particular has an early deadline; it was early September last fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents do not have to be Brock Scholars to apply for these scholarships and they don\u2019t have to work with me. But you should always be thinking about preparing yourself to apply for these awards.
