Jannat Saeed admitted she still hasn\u2019t entirely processed the news.<\/p>\n

Saeed is a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Brock Scholar in the Honors College, majoring in software systems, international studies and political science. She took her last Cleveland (Tennessee) High School class at the age of 15, then\u2014after turning 16\u2014immediately started taking classes at Cleveland State Community College with \u201ca bunch of older people.\u201d<\/p>\n

So processing news should come quickly to her.<\/p>\n

But it was an email message that threw her for a loop, she said, one she won\u2019t believe until it actually takes place.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations, you\u2019re coming to Princeton over the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saeed will spend June and July at Princeton University\u2019s School of Public and International Affairs after being awarded a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute (JSI) Fellowship, a rigorous academic graduate-level preparation program for undergraduate juniors committed to public service careers.<\/p>\n

Saeed was one of two UTC juniors landing a PPIA JSI fellowship, joining Emma Sprayberry\u2014who will spend her summer at Carnegie Mellon University\u2019s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I learned I got it, I was truly dancing around,\u201d Saeed said with a laugh, \u201cbut I still haven\u2019t quite processed it yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess until I\u2019m there, I truly won\u2019t be able to say, \u2018I\u2019ve made it,\u2019 but I\u2019ve been bragging about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to its website, the JSI curriculum includes economics, statistics, domestic\/international policy issues and leadership topics\u2014all designed to sharpen quantitative, analytic and communication skills.<\/p>\n

Participation in the PPIA program will potentially make it more economically feasible for Saeed and Sprayberry to attend graduate school immediately after obtaining their undergraduate degrees, as it offers a $5,000 scholarship at a PPIA consortium graduate school.<\/p>\n

Along with Princeton and Carnegie Mellon, other PPIA consortium institutions include the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the University of Washington and the University of California, Berkeley.<\/p>\n

Saaed said she is interested in serving in roles where she can create public policy on the international front utilizing software and technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe often don\u2019t understand we\u2019re now in an era where pretty much everything we do relies on some sort of software technology,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Princeton experience will be new in many different ways for Saeed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to learn what it\u2019s like being around people who have similar mindsets as me,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not to say there\u2019s nobody here that doesn\u2019t, but I\u2019m going to be seeing these people every day for seven weeks and we all share some similarities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really interesting to know where they\u2019re going to go, so I hope to gain some insight on what I can do in my future based on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saeed said she plans to soak it all in and take advantage of this opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis makes me sound like a nerd, but I\u2019ve done lots of research papers and cited some scholars who teach at Princeton. I\u2019ve been thinking, \u2018What if I run into them?\u2019\u201d she joked. \u201cBeing able to meet people who I\u2019ve looked up to or who are symbolic of the field and then being able to be on a normal level with them is so exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saeed has lived at home during her time at UTC, so her first actual \u201con your own\u201d opportunity will occur at an Ivy League institution.<\/p>\n

She told the story of an application essay asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s something that you want to learn here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing I wrote was, \u2018This is an opportunity for me to gain independence and to find autonomy. I feel like people see me and know I have all these aspirations and goals. I\u2019m ambitious, but they don\u2019t understand that I\u2019m still kind of sheltered in a way,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when I go to Princeton, I won\u2019t even have a friend there before I go. I will truly have to find my place there, and it\u2019s incredible. There\u2019s so much I want to learn and so much I want to take in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike Saaed, Sprayberry is accustomed to being on her own while pursuing educational opportunities.<\/p>\n

Emma Sprayberry<\/p><\/div>\n

Sprayberry is currently in Spain participating in an international studies program at the University of Alcal\u00e1, located northeast of Madrid.<\/p>\n

During the fall 2022 semester, she attended McGill University in Montreal after being accepted into the Killam Fellowships Program. That Canadian excursion came on the heels of a 10-week summer research opportunity at the University of Saskatchewan through the Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink program.<\/p>\n

She previously spent the summer of 2021 participating in a study abroad opportunity in South Korea thanks to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and a Freeman-ASIA Scholarship.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving the PPIA JSI under my belt will make me more competitive for graduate school, which I\u2019m glad about because I feel like\u2014since I\u2019ve been everywhere\u2014I don\u2019t have a lot of depth in a certain area,\u201d said Sprayberry, whose longterm goal is to work for an international nonprofit such as UNICEF. \u201cI\u2019m hoping this summer will help me clarify my goals after undergrad; I\u2019m realizing there are so many pathways that I could go towards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking four classes: two are math courses, economics and statistics, and two are about international affairs. I\u2019m looking forward to those classes and getting a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Innovations in Honors student is pursuing two bachelor\u2019s degrees\u2014one in humanities: international studies with an emphasis in Asian studies and another in Spanish\u2014along with a minor in anthropology. She grew up in nearby Rossville, Georgia, and is a 2020 graduate of Chattanooga Christian School.<\/p>\n

Despite being the recipient of national competitive scholarships, Sprayberry acknowledged apprehension while waiting to learn if she would be one of the 30 collegiate students selected for the Carnegie Mellon program.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was kind of overwhelming because Jannat texted me after she found out and was like, \u2018Did you hear back yet?\u2019 Sprayberry said. \u201cShe had gotten her admission, and I hadn\u2019t seen mine yet because it was in my spam. I was really stressed out.<\/p>\n
