{"id":48717,"date":"2023-03-12T09:38:25","date_gmt":"2023-03-12T13:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=48717"},"modified":"2023-03-20T10:17:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T14:17:46","slug":"for-all-the-marbles-high-school-competitors-experience-highs-and-lows-of-rollercoaster-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/for-all-the-marbles-high-school-competitors-experience-highs-and-lows-of-rollercoaster-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"For all the marbles: High school competitors experience highs and lows of roller coaster competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"UTC 2023 Marble Roller Coaster Competition\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P2K_N05kxcw?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The task was straightforward: Build a roller coaster.<\/p>\n<p>Out of paper and tape.<\/p>\n<p>With no plans in hand at the start.<\/p>\n<p>At least three feet tall with either a loop or a jump in the design.<\/p>\n<p>In two hours.<\/p>\n<p>In the second year of the Marble Roller Coaster Competition, hosted by the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, almost 100 students from local middle and high schools spent 20 minutes brainstorming a design, then had 80 minutes to build it and make it work.<\/p>\n<p>Each team was given the following supplies and nothing more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A glass marble<\/li>\n<li>500-sheet pack of printer paper<\/li>\n<li>Pencil<\/li>\n<li>Pair of scissors<\/li>\n<li>Roll of Scotch tape<\/li>\n<li>Three-foot ruler<\/li>\n<li>20&#215;30-inch foam core base<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coasters were judged on how many times the marble made it all the way through and how fast it completed each run. In teams of three to four, students discussed\u2014or argued about\u2014design strategies. They shushed each other to get their ideas into the conversation. They started building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt works every time!\u201d one student said, trying to convince his teammates of a design element.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does this not work?\u201d an agonized voice
