Rebecca Tolbert, a police officer at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is trying to make them safer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world where women are more independent, self-sufficient and empowered, but the violence and crime in the world is more prevalent and increasing. Rebecca Tolbert<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Toward that goal, she is teaching a free course on Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) from Tuesday through Thursday, March 21-23. Tolbert said the program is designed to teach the basic skills to defend against physical threats, including abduction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe address\u00a0risks\u00a0and\u00a0situational\u00a0awareness\u00a0of your environment\u2014work, home and social\u2014and your\u00a0options of defense if needed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>R.A.D. is an internationally recognized alliance of teachers who train women on self-defense techniques. It is the largest program endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Its self-defense philosophies have been taught at more than 3,500 colleges, universities, city, county and state police departments nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cR.A.D. is important because it helps women to realize their power,\u00a0strength\u00a0and confidence to physically defend themselves,\u201d Tolbert said. \u201cIt teaches them\u00a0that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0OK to be aggressive and confident in their responsibility and commitment to defend against violence directed at them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The class uses real-world\u00a0violence\u00a0scenarios\u00a0to teach defensive techniques, said Tolbert, who has taught R.A.D. classes at UTC for 16 years and now is the lead instructor for R.A.D., R.A.D. for Kids and Advanced R.A.D.<\/p>\n<p>UTC Police Chief Robert Ratchford said Tolbert is dedicated to keeping people safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecky has always been passionate about her service to the community as a police officer,\u201d he said. \u201cCrime prevention, communication and keeping the public informed on how people can take care of themselves has always been a driving force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not only a knowledgeable, excellent presenter and trainer, she also has a genuine care and concern for the public that she serves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her career as a police officer, Tolbert said she has been involved in incidents\u2014especially in social settings with drugs or alcohol present\u2014that could have turned out differently if the woman had known R.A.D. techniques<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experience is that it does give them more confidence\u00a0to use the learned\u00a0basic techniques to defend themselves when attacked,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gives them options to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n<p><strong>What:<\/strong> Rape Aggression Defense training<\/p>\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong> 6-8 p.m. March 21-23<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong> Challenger STEM Learning Center Room 148, 755 Mocs Alumni Drive, across from the UTC Police Department.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much:<\/strong> Free<\/p>\n<p><strong>To register: <\/strong>Email Marion Perkins at <strong><a href=\"mailto:marion-perkins@utc.edu\">marion-perkins@utc.edu<\/a><\/strong> no later than noon on March 21<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UTC Police Department will be offering Rape Aggression Defense training from 6-9 p.m. daily today through Thursday (March 21-23) at the Challenger Center Building Room 128, led by Sgt.
