<\/strong>Dr. Vandana Shiva, a world\u2010renowned environmental leader and thinker, will speak at UTC on April 26th<\/sup> as part of the George T. Hunter Lecture Series. Her lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall located inside the Fine Arts Center, located at Vine and Palmetto Streets. All lectures in the series are free and open to the public. Seating is limited and is on a first\u2010come first\u2010serve basis.<\/p>\n

Born in India,\u00a0Shiva is currently the Director of the Research\u00a0Foundation on Science, Technology, and Ecology. She is the author of many books,\u00a0including Water Wars: Pollution, Profits, and Privatization<\/em>. Shiva is a leader in the\u00a0International Forum on Globalization and has addressed the World Trade Organization\u00a0summit in Seattle, as well as the recent World Economic Forum in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

Time<\/em> magazine recognized Shiva as an environmental hero, and Asia Week<\/em> has called her one\u00a0of the five most powerful communicators in Asia. Shiva is a recipient of Global 500\u00a0Award of the United Nations and Earth Day International Award. She has also received\u00a0the Alternative Nobel Prize Right Livelihood Award and is a member of the Order of the\u00a0Golden Ark.<\/p>\n

Shiva has fought for changes in the practice of agriculture and food. Intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics, genetic engineering are among the fields where Shiva has contributed intellectually and through activist campaigns.<\/p>\n

The third annual George T. Hunter Lecture Series, which was sponsored by the Benwood Foundation in partnership with The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, The Ochs Center, and CreateHere, also brought best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, and education reformer Geoffrey Canada to campus.<\/p>\n
