{"id":51044,"date":"2023-06-28T08:39:03","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T12:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=51044"},"modified":"2023-07-06T08:37:44","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T12:37:44","slug":"securing-the-internet-of-things-at-utc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/securing-the-internet-of-things-at-utc\/","title":{"rendered":"Securing \u2018The Internet of Things\u2019 at UTC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"Defending the Internet of Things\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OwTibnjqwwI?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Don Reising\u2019s classes and research at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga revolve around the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a broad field of study and a booming industry encompassing much of our tech-driven society, from cell phones and cars to smart appliances and power grids.<\/p>\n<p>These devices and systems are designed to make life easier, but there\u2019s a trade-off, said Reising, an associate professor of electrical engineering who specializes in digital communication and signal processing.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers forgo security to mass produce them, creating back doors for hackers and other bad actors seeking personal data, Reising said. His research in radio frequency fingerprinting&#8211;a technique to identify and differentiate unique characteristics of transmissions from wireless devices&#8211;aims to shore up these risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re starting to look at it from the black hat\u2019s perspective, like how can an adversary defeat our fingerprinting. We&#8217;re trying to push it to evolve that technology\u201d and scale it up for operational systems with a high level of security.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an in-demand field within electrical engineering where starting salaries can range from $30 an hour for undergraduate degree holders to about $45 an hour for those with master\u2019s degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity is one of these things where you really can do anything,\u201d Reising said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/engineering-and-computer-science\/academic-programs\/electrical-engineering\"><strong>Click here to learn about the UTC electrical engineering program<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Reising cut his chops in security as a soldier. He served in the U.S. Army for 10 years before earning a master\u2019s degree and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Army, I fixed communications equipment, and I wanted to know how it worked and why it worked the way it did. That led me to electrical engineering and into digital communications,\u201d said Reising.<\/p>\n<p>Students most drawn to the field are those who also innately want to know how things work, Reising said.<\/p>\n<p>Why should they choose electrical engineering at UTC?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere you\u2019re going to get a lot of one-on-one and faculty are here and available to you.
