Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hannah Nelms isn\u2019t sure she\u2019s discovered something brand-new in botanical research, but she\u2019s pretty sure she\u2019s the first to put it on paper.<\/p>\n<p>While pursuing a master\u2019s degree in environmental science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Nelms discovered a method of propagating wild American plum trees by taking cuttings\u2014small stems from a tree\u2019s trunk\u2014and getting them to root in greenhouses.<\/p>\n<p>Other experiments may have done the same thing, but she couldn\u2019t find any research records to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just didn\u2019t write it down,\u201d said Nelms, who received a master\u2019s in May. Davenport Professor in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science.<\/p>\n<p>Wild American plums grow south from Rhode Island to northern Florida and west to the eastern edges of Montana and Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p>They aren\u2019t the species that produce plums sold in grocery stores; it\u2019s easy to propagate those trees, said Nelms, who grew up in Cookeville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know all about those plums. We know how to root those plums,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>American plum trees produce smaller fruits that don\u2019t appeal to shoppers, so not as much attention has been paid to propagating them, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople may not even know they exist, but animals do,\u201d Nelms said. \u201cThe animals eat them.
