It also seeks to connect residents and park visitors with the natural ecosystem that Chattanooga sits within.<\/p>\n<p>Then came Mix\u2019s walking orders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis exact request was, \u2018Can you make a map for our parks plan that people will be inspired by 100 years from now the same way that we are at the Nolen map?\u2019\u201d Mix said. \u201cSo I was like, \u2018That\u2019s a tall order.\u2019 And then I was like, \u2018Let me just use that for inspiration.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That inspiration\u2014landscape architect John Nolen\u2019s 1911 \u201cGeneral Features of a Park System for Chattanooga, Tennessee\u201d\u2014was turned into an award-winning map.<\/p>\n<p>Mix won a Cartography Special Interest Group Excellence Award for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/about\/events\/uc\/agenda\/virtual-map-gallery#\/submission-detail\/648236cbcc0152cb5ccbcb33\">\u201cA 21st Century Park System for Chattanooga, Tennessee\u201d<\/a> at the 2023 Esri User Conference, held in San Diego in mid-July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/interdisciplinary-geospatial-technology-lab\"><b>Click here to learn more about UTC&#8217;s Interdisciplinary Geospatial Technology Lab (IGTLab)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Esri, an international supplier of geographic information system software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications, annually holds a user conference. This year\u2019s event had more than 18,000 attendees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Nolen drafted a parks plan in 1911 that established many of the parks that we see today in Chattanooga,\u201d Mix explained, \u201cso this is seen as the next iteration of Chattanooga\u2019s park system\u2014a very visionary, aspirational parks plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolen studied under noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the co-designer of New York\u2019s Central Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I took Nolen\u2019s hand-drawn map and used his color palette and applied that using modern 21st-century cartography techniques,\u201d Mix continued. \u201cThat\u2019s where the inspiration for that map came from, paying a nod to our history while looking forward to the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the data in there was collected, analyzed and processed through spatial data science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The undertaking\u2014making a digital map look hand-drawn\u2014was a labor of love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat kind of style of cartography has always been an interest of mine, so I have some techniques I\u2019ve developed over the years,\u201d he said. \u201cThe time-consuming part was making sure that the data was 100% accurate because it was a brand-new data set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin quoted architect and urban designer Daniel Burnham, who played a prominent role in creating master plans for developing several cities\u2014including downtown Chicago\u2014in describing the work he wanted Mix to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked Charlie to bring together our 21st century GIS driven park planning work and wrap it with the place-based soulfulness of the original Nolen plan that together can create perhaps a new vision of Chattanooga as a \u2018city in a park,\u2019\u2019 Martin said. \u201cWe draw from the best of our past, attaching the best of our present to shape this incredible landscape we call home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA plan\u2019s look and feel matters. The famous architect Daniel Burnham best described why when he said, \u2018Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men\u2019s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. The map was authored by Mix, GIS Assistant Director Nyssa Hunt, recent UTC graduate Will Stuart (the recipient of a master\u2019s in environmental science), and Biology, Geology and Environmental Science Associate Professor Azad Hossain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis map highlights an applied research project that I was the (principal investigator) on for the city,\u201d Mix said. \u201cThe City of Chattanooga and the nonprofit green|spaces came to us, asking for help mapping the city\u2019s urban tree canopy because they needed a baseline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mix said Planet Labs, a small satellite company, flew its satellites over Chattanooga and provided custom tasking images. We map the earth every single day.
