Musicologists, music education historians, and historians of education will gather to discuss research in music teaching and learning at a triennial national symposium, co-sponsored by the UTC Music Department.\u00a0 This event will be held at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel from Thursday-Saturday, June 2-4.<\/p>\n

The keynote speech and all musical events are open to the public. \u00a0See the dates and times for these events here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than forty selected papers and panels will be presented during the symposium on the history of music teaching and learning conference. Four musical groups will perform, and Charles R. Wilson, Professor of Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi, will speak on southern musical culture.<\/p>\n

In addition to the UTC Department of Music, the symposium is co-sponsored by the Library of Congress, The University of Mississippi Department of Music, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Tennessee Music Education Association.<\/p>\n

UTC music faculty member Roland Carter will conduct the Chattanooga Society for the Preservation of African-American Song on Friday night and UTC Music Professor Monte Coulter will perform with the Chattanooga Boys Choir under Vincent Oakes on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Dr. William R. Lee of the UTC Music Department has worked with Jere Humphreys of Arizona State University and Alan Spurgeon of The University of Mississippi to organize the conference.<\/p>\n

UTC graduate students are also represented on the program.<\/p>\n

The Eighth Regiment Band of Rome Georgia will perform nineteenth-century music on Friday. David Ivey, who led the Sand Mountain Sacred Harp Singers in two songs recorded for the soundtrack of the movie Cold Mountain,<\/em> will lead symposium attendees in the traditional sounds of Sacred Harp music on Saturday at the ChooChoo ballroom.<\/p>\n

Attendees include researchers from Argentina, Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada. Scott Shuler, president of the Music Educators National Conference, the largest music organization in the world, and Ed Wasiak, president of the Canadian Music Education Association, will also speak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
