{"id":52617,"date":"2023-08-25T08:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T12:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=52617"},"modified":"2023-08-25T08:00:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T12:00:39","slug":"westbrook-scholarship-helping-utc-chemistry-and-physics-students-for-30-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/westbrook-scholarship-helping-utc-chemistry-and-physics-students-for-30-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Westbrook Scholarship: Helping UTC chemistry and physics students for 30 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For 30 years, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/arts-and-sciences\/chemistry-and-physics\/department-of-chemistry-and-physics-scholarships\/westbrook-scholarship\">Westbrook Scholarship Program<\/a><\/strong> has helped first-year chemistry and physics students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga complete their degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship provides $14,000 over four years to eligible incoming freshmen in the UTC Department of Chemistry and Physics.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship was established in 1993 by UTC alumnus Howard L. I see it as the study of the big things, not big in scale per se, but big in meaning,\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cPhysics takes us to places that would have never been imaginable just a few centuries ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt said one of his best teachers in high school didn\u2019t just teach physics, \u201cHe also forced students to switch their brains to think like physicists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe weren\u2019t just given formulas; we were shown how they were derived. We spent many class periods solving for a certain variable in a formula to show how they all were related,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt aspires to a career as a university professor and researcher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearching our universe has always excited me and I love the idea of making my hobby into a profession. She took organic chemistry the next year with a lab component, and it changed the course of her academic career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat class was what single-handedly made me love science all over again and it made me look past my previously negative experiences with the subject&#8230;I quickly faced my fears of failing and chose to instead learn as much as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence said she now recognizes \u201cthat I need to be constantly learning. With chemistry, there will always be new discoveries to make and subjects to learn. I will never grow tired of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A self-proclaimed lover of \u201cmake-up and all beautiful things,\u201d Lawrence wants to work in the cosmetics industry to develop \u201cproducts that enhance a person and who they are without animal testing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from her academic goals, Lawrence said she chose UTC because she has always loved Chattanooga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose lucky enough to live in Chattanooga get to experience its bustling city life, surrounded by art and culture, and I wanted to be a part of that community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">*\u00a0 he followed suit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat course was among the best and most enjoyable I have ever taken and, just because of it, I now want to major in astrophysics,\u201d said Hansen, who also praised his high school physics teacher for helping stoke his passion for the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve always valued science subjects and have studied a lot of them, but none have ever come close to physics in terms of my enjoyment,\u201d he said. \u201cNo matter the topic\u2014whether it&#8217;s mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermal physics, modern physics, waves, optics, electricity or magnetism\u2014I appreciate learning about the underlying principles of life and how everything functions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Chattanooga native, Hansen said choosing UTC was easy because of the excellent physics program, beautiful campus and close-to-home location for him.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to pursue a doctorate in astrophysics and work for NASA&#8217;s Langley Research Center in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to work at this facility to learn more about the astral bodies that are out there and to gain a better grasp of what is going on in the universe as it continues to expand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Hansen said, \u201cI&#8217;m looking for a place that will enable me to use my love of physics to improve the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: University\u2019s pre-health science tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a university that will help me exceed my academic expectations and challenge me to do my best, and UTC is the university that will do that for me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Science is more than a means of getting into medical school for Hurst, who also describes it as the ultimate tool for exploring life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love understanding the science behind our everyday processes and learning different things I have never heard of. I learn better when learning hands-on, and I think this is one of the main reasons I love science,\u201d she said. It feels like there is always something new to learn when learning about science in general, and that is the main reason science interests me the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurst wants to be an anesthesiologist and potentially work in hospital leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChemistry means the world to me because it is what makes up my world.
