Back row: Paige Hopkins, Daniel Morataya, UTC Police Chief Robert Ratchford.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nursing students take part in UTC police training<\/p>\n<p>One student was shot in the legs and had to be carried out of the building.<\/p>\n<p>One was shot in the chest.<\/p>\n<p>One was shot in the back but no one noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the shots weren\u2019t real\u2014and neither were the wounds.<\/p>\n<p>The mayhem was part of a recent training exercise in which officers in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Police Department dealt with how they would react to an active shooter on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The six students are all seniors in the UTC School of Nursing. While they were victims and not nurses in the various scenarios, they said they still learned lessons from watching the police officers that will help them in their future careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we were the victims, but also we saw the care that they would provide putting on the tourniquets and how they would escort the victims out and just how they all would work together,\u201d said nursing student Daniel Morataya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned that all situations are a little bit different,\u201d said student Maggie Howell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever people hear \u2018active shooter drills\u2019 or just \u2018active shooters,\u2019 I guess they just think of shooting and loud noise,\u201d she said. \u201cBut there are also situations where it\u2019s very quiet, and that\u2019s not what you expect. It\u2019s very eerie. Or it could be very chaotic. It can be a lot of things. You never know what you\u2019re going to walk into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although they played the shooter\u2019s victims, the students\u2019 medical training came into play in some scenarios. There were times when in the midst of the chaos\u2014which took place in the Doctor\u2019s Building on McCallie Avenue\u2014a police officer would shout: \u201cIs there anyone that has experience in medicine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause in a real-life situation, you want all hands on deck if people are bleeding out,\u201d said student Mallory Collier. \u201cPart of their training was to ask if there were any medical professionals that could help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UTC Police Chief Robert Ratchford said the students were indispensable to the exercise, known as Advanced&nbsp;Law Enforcement&nbsp;Rapid Response&nbsp;Training, or ALERRT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all part of the training that we\u2019re going through right now,\u201d he said. \u201cWe train other folks and, of course, the police get trained as well. Sometimes people don\u2019t know exactly what all we do in this ALERRT training.
