(OTI) and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.\u00a0 During the 2010-11 academic year, OTI donated ETAP software, gifting the lab with a $380,000 product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cETAP is the most widely used electrical engineering software in the power industry,\u201d said Mark Bowman, Hopf\u2019s supervisor at TVA.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Will Sutton of the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science said the lab will be used for undergraduate and graduate education, to prepare students for the workforce, to provide specific TVA training as well as industry training, and research.<\/p>\n<p>Hopf concluded the most needed additions to the lab were the large monitors, which will be hung in the back of the lab.\u00a0 Students have workspace in front of them and computers behind them, and so it was difficult for students to work on their computers while they watched the instructor work through an analytical problem.\u00a0 The new screens will improve the efficiency of teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did a ten-minute presentation for the assistant to the chief nuclear officer of TVA.\u00a0 I learned a lot about making an effective business presentation,\u201d Hopf said.<\/p>\n<p>Hopf admitted she was shocked that within days, her presentation had reached the chief nuclear officer where it was approved, and a check was signed.<\/p>\n<p>When the check was presented to UTC by TVA\u00a0 officials, TVA Senior Manager of Nuclear Design Engineering Kent Brown said the partnership between TVA and UTC goes beyond monitors and employees knowing how to use computer programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to enable UTC to better educate and transfer knowledge so that our talent pool is richer,\u201d Brown said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s about equipping students with knowledge.\u00a0 They need an underlying, fundamental knowledge of science.\u00a0 It\u2019s the difference between a house painter and an artist.\u00a0 I want to hire the artist, not the painter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown said TVA and UTC\u00a0 needs to work collaboratively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the creator of providing the power source for our economy.\u00a0 The University is effective in shooting arrows into the future.\u00a0 We give direction to the shooting arrows,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When TVA officials decided to make a contribution to the ETAP-TVA Power Lab at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a student intern\u2019s presentation persuaded them to donate $8,000 for two large screen monitors, installation, and upgrades for a podium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"more-link-wrap\"><span><a class=\"more-link button text\" href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2011\/08\/etap-tva-power-lab-benefits-from-student-intern-presentation\/\">Continue Reading <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":294,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","_ef_editorial_meta_date_first-draft-date":"","_ef_editorial_meta_paragraph_assignment":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_needs-photo":"","_ef_editorial_meta_number_word-count":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_slider":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_featurette":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[59,661],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-5578","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-college-of-engineering-and-computer-science","7":"category-students","8":"entry","9":"has-post-thumbnail"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
