{"id":56635,"date":"2024-01-26T08:48:13","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T13:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=56635"},"modified":"2024-02-06T11:16:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T16:16:19","slug":"cuwip-trip-nets-recognition-for-utc-sophomore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/cuwip-trip-nets-recognition-for-utc-sophomore\/","title":{"rendered":"CUWiP trip nets recognition for UTC sophomore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"Physics Profile - Olivia Ziemer\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5L792OCug_c?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At a recent conference for undergraduate women physics majors, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Olivia Ziemer initially found herself in awe, as \u201cI\u2019ve never been in a room of that many women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in my life, which was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also awed the judges, returning to UTC with first prize in the poster competition.<\/p>\n<p>During the weekend of Jan. 19-21, Ziemer\u2014accompanied by physics majors Emery Rutledge and April Horn and UC Foundation Professor of Physics Tatiana Allen\u2014attended the American Physical Society Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the conference, known as CUWiP, is to support female undergraduate physics majors by giving them access to professional conferences while participating in workshops on different topics\u2014such as graduate school opportunities and how to be successful in the physics profession.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day conference had more than 200 attendees and included visits to the Georgia Tech and Emory University laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>Ziemer, a biophysics major and Brock Scholar in the UTC Honors College, presented a poster she started working on during her freshman year titled \u201cThe Relationship Between Viscosity of E. Coli Suspensions and Increasing Antibiotic Resistance.\u201d The poster resulted from her year-long research with her faculty advisor, Assistant Professor Luis Sanchez-Diaz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt really good to be acknowledged for my effort,\u201d said Ziemer, acknowledging that she was not expecting first prize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very surprised because Dr. Allen had suggested the day before that I try to win when giving my presentation,\u201d she said with a laugh. \u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019m not super competitive. I don\u2019t want to make myself nervous.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a weird step to go from presenting research and speeches from a lab and bouncing ideas off of your advisor to presenting it to people you didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called the poster a great way to start working \u201con your scientific vocabulary\u201d and making it accessible to people \u201cwho have no idea what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research centered on the property of the E. coli bacteria. \u201cAs they become ampicillin resistant, cells become more rigid,\u201d she explained, and her work included collecting microscopy data to see how a single cell\u2019s rigidity translates to the viscosity of an entire population.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Tigard, Oregon, Ziemer and her family moved twice during her high school years\u2014first to the Charlotte, North Carolina, suburbs and then to the Chattanooga area. She completed her senior year as a dual enrollment student at Chattanooga State Community College before enrolling at UTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really happy that I came here because the physics department is small and very tight-knit, which is great,\u201d she said. \u201cI love the size and the community, and I know all of my professors on a first-name basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ziemer, Rutledge and Horn are all members of the UTC chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS).
