It was designed not only to bring first-year students to campus, but to help them build community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I was drawn to this group of students because I like students in transition\u2014students who are trying to figure it out and understand what they\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s something special about a group of students who are excited to experience college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s goal, she said, is to retain students by creating a welcoming environment so they choose to stay and finish their degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes you go to a state institution and you can get kind of lost,\u201d Yokley said. \u201cBut one of the things \u2018A Moc\u2019s First Year\u2019 really says is you don\u2019t have to get lost. There are communities for you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour goal is to get a four-year degree. Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Amy Brock-Hon, the Robert Lake Wilson Professor of Geology at UTC, will teach \u201cMOCS Explore Chattanooga,\u201d which combines two geology classes and a lab.<\/p>\n<p>To understand geology, you must \u201cget out there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lab is the earth,\u201d said Brock-Hon, who plans to hold class outdoors in places like the Cumberland Plateau and Lookout Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Whether students are new to Chattanooga or have lived here their whole lives, Brock-Hon wants students to learn about the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all the times I\u2019ve been teaching and as a student myself, I understand the power of going somewhere different\u2014even if it\u2019s not far away\u2014with a group of people and making connections with them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting Lecturer Lisa Bellino\u2019s \u201cLet\u2019s Ballet the World\u201d will intertwine cultural anthropology with ballet.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not a dancer, don\u2019t worry, said Bellino, who is also an adult ballet instructor. This class is for any first-year student, regardless of experience or body type.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDance feels very inaccessible to most people, especially ballet,\u201d Bellino said. \u201cI love ballet so much. I love all the wonderful things it\u2019s done in my life, so I hate that it feels inaccessible to people. Just as Delight and I were talking about creating these opportunities for freshmen to feel like they belong, I was like, \u2018That\u2019s dance.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat community of people where we\u2019re all trying something for the first time and we\u2019re all going to laugh at ourselves and have that opportunity to be vulnerable with each other \u2026 I think that shows strength and vulnerability, which is just something all of us are trying to learn somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For this fall\u2019s introduction of \u201cA Moc\u2019s First Year,\u201d Yokley said there will be enough spots for about 1,200 students, and she hopes to grow the program until every first-year student can participate.<\/p>\n<p>Yokley wants students to meet, establish meaningful relationships and feel confident as new UTC students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir first semester,\u201d she said, \u201cthey\u2019re finding their connections, building some roots and digging deep so that when the second year comes, they\u2019re like, \u2018Yep, I\u2019m coming right back here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cA Moc\u2019s First Year\u201d Fall 2024 Catalog<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Gary W.
