<\/strong>The recent bouts of bad weather in the Chattanooga area have proven the importance of having reliable electricity. In an effort to educate and promote changes in our electrical system, The UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science is hosting a Smart-Grid Workshop on Wednesday, October 12, in the University Center Auditorium. The workshop is free and open to public. Advanced registration is required. <\/p>\n

Through a series of presentations, this workshop aims to find answers and present solutions to several questions related to Smart Grid technology and to identify technical roadblocks for innovative research.<\/p>\n

Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to showcase the latest deployments, lessons learned and experience gained during recent tornadoes and hurricanes. The goal of the workshop is to promote Smart-Grid technologies, and envision the technology road map for the 21st Century.<\/p>\n

John D. McDonald, Director of Technical Strategy and Policy Development at General Electric (GE), will give the keynote address. <\/em>In his current position at GE, John McDonald is responsible for setting and driving the vision that integrates GE\u2019s standards participation, and Digital Energy\u2019s industry organization participa\u00adtion through leadership activities, regulatory\/ policy participation, education programs, and product\/systems development into comprehen\u00adsive solutions for customers.<\/p>\n

In the past he has been awarded the IEEE Millennium Medal, the IEEE PES Excellence in Power Distribution Engineering Award and many other honors. In 2010-2011, he was chair for the NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Panel Governing Board and is a member of NEMA\u2019s Smart Grid Council.<\/p>\n
