Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nehemiah Antoine\u2019s four-page resume is filled top to bottom with his chemistry-related endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>As he graduates from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Saturday, May 4, with a bachelor\u2019s degree in chemistry, Antoine\u2014also a member of the Innovations in Honors program in the Honors College\u2014reflects on his UTC experience.<\/p>\n<p>A Ringgold, Georgia, native, Antoine chose UTC because of his love for the city, he said.<\/p>\n<p>His original plan was biology and eventually medical school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying I don\u2019t like talking to people, don\u2019t get me wrong,\u201d Antoine said. \u201cAfter doing research and taking more chemistry courses here, I found I actually have a very strong passion for chemistry more than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still wanting to incorporate his interest in medicine, Antoine focused much of his research on medicinal chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was always fascinated by the human body and ways to improve it,\u201d he said, \u201cso I wanted to tailor my love for medicine along with my love for chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m interested in the chemistry of drugs. I want to improve the drugs that are out there in the market and make them better and maybe even cure some diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the resume proves, Antoine\u2019s experience in academia is extensive.<\/p>\n<p>On top of his work as a research student, which involved performing organic synthesis, analyzing data using techniques such as X-ray crystallography and using chemistry software, Antoine worked as a work-study student and lab assistant in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a nice balance between working, as the name implies, and studying and doing what I need to be doing to go forward in my major,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Antoine is also a twice-published researcher, which is something Dr. Keenan Dungey, head of the UTC Department of Chemistry and Physics and professor of chemistry, called \u201cvery impressive\u201d for an undergraduate student.<\/p>\n<p>Antoine\u2019s undergraduate departmental honors thesis is included in those publications, which he finished as a junior\u2014another exemplary feat, according to Dungey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think I was going to get publications as an undergrad,\u201d Antoine said. \u201cI thought that was more expected for graduate students. But really, it\u2019s because of my professor. He said Antoine had no problem interacting with the speakers and always asked thoughtful questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, no undergrad can usually do that,\u201d Dungey said. \u201cIt\u2019s even a challenge for us faculty with our specializations. \u2018Can I understand it enough to ask an intelligent question?\u2019 I personally challenge myself and I try to do that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNehemiah does that. He will ask an intelligent question; it doesn\u2019t matter what the field is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the summer of 2022, Antoine received the UC Foundation\u2019s Tom Rybolt and Richard X. Zhang Endowed Undergraduate Research in Chemistry Scholarship. Being the president gives me an opportunity to come out of my shell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dungey said that Antoine has pushed the chemistry club to do more than it has in recent years. As part of his club president responsibilities, he had to present a speech at the lab coat ceremony for sophomore chemistry majors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Our mission is to share the love of chemistry with the community,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018I couldn\u2019t have written a better speech,\u2019\u201d Dungey said. \u201cHe\u2019s authentic; he really believes that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Antoine is humble about his achievements, Dungey didn\u2019t hesitate to brag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gets straight A\u2019s in class with hard curriculum,\u201d Dungey said, \u201cand yet he\u2019s still positive, friendly, giving and works well with others. He almost swept all of our senior awards at our awards banquet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One was the Outstanding Senior Award, which Antoine said he is most proud of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that one was probably the best I\u2019ve ever received,\u201d he said. \u201cNot only do you need to make really good grades in chemistry, but you also have to be very involved in the department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this award really does represent the fact that grades are only half the battle. There are also many other things you could do with your major and to show your love for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antoine also received the Service Award, which he said he does not take lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love making connections with the students I work with in the lab. I just love seeing them succeed and going to do whatever it is they want to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Next in his academic adventures, Antoine will take his hard work to the University of Alabama, where he will work towards a doctoral degree in inorganic medicinal chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>The message he would give his freshman self is simple: Be open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not even know I was going to probably become a medicinal chemist when I was coming into college,\u201d he said. \u201cIt goes to show that there are so many things out there and I would like to encourage my past self to just ask questions and try new things. You will never know unless you try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On top of academic diligence, Dungey said Antoine\u2019s kindness helped him stand out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s who he is,\u201d Dungey said. \u201cHe\u2019s always the most positive person.
