Three ceremonies were held over two days starting Friday, May 3, with more than 1,300 undergraduates and nearly 300 graduate students presented for degrees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/utchattanooga\/albums\/72177720316656711\/\"><strong>Click here for a Flickr gallery of commencement photos<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All three ceremonies began with the march of the gonfalons\u2014ceremonial banners originating from Western European culture and the Roman Empire\u2014representing the academic colleges that make up the University. The student members of the Chancellor\u2019s Ambassadors carried them down the center aisle of the McKenzie Arena floor and to the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Braden Stillwell, a sociology major from Etowah, Tennessee, hoisted the purple gonfalon representing the UTC Honors College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard they haven\u2019t been able to do this in a couple of years since before COVID,\u201d Stillwell said. \u201cIt\u2019s really awesome to bring this tradition back and add another awesome thing to the graduation ceremony that\u2019s about to happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited. Among the proud parents in attendance was UT Martin Chancellor Yancy Freeman Sr., formerly the longtime UTC vice chancellor for enrollment management and student affairs.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Rafielle, made a quick trip to campus to watch their son, Yancy Freeman Jr.\u2014a UTC admissions counselor for the greater Chattanooga area\u2014cross the stage as the recipient of a Master of Public Health degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations to the UTC spring 2024 graduates, especially my son and legacy, Yancy E. Freeman Jr. The world is waiting for your greatness. Go Mocs!\u201d Freeman Sr. said.<\/p>\n<p>Following the ceremony, Freeman Sr. made the 300-mile drive back to Martin for that university\u2019s Saturday commencement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was going to be a struggle for him to get here,\u201d Freeman Jr. said. \u201cThe fact that my family and friends took the time out of their day to come and support me really makes me feel loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freeman Jr. previously received a bachelor\u2019s degree in exercise and health sciences from the University in 2020\u2014right after the pandemic started. Commencement that spring was held virtually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really let down when we couldn\u2019t have graduation; I understood the circumstances, but it still was not fun,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I knew in getting another degree through UTC, I had to do it bigger and better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is really exciting. It\u2019s fulfilling. I took off and ran it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson replaced the introduction to the traditional graduation song, \u201cPomp and Circumstance,\u201d with the first 10 bars of \u201cThe Imperial March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the crowds erupt in applause when they heard the song, but the band had fun, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first commencement since the pandemic that we\u2019ve had the full ensemble,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIt was a total of six people in the ensemble. Now I\u2019m up to 14, which is the original group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re loving being back together and they\u2019re loving the joviality of the whole thing. Before they said goodbye to UTC, the two reflected on their journey from Ukraine and their time in Chattanooga.<\/li>\n<li>Triple major and Brock Scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/right-size-right-fit-triple-major-jannat-saeed-reflects-on-her-time-at-utc\/\"><strong>Jannat Saeed<\/strong><\/a> received bachelor\u2019s degrees in history, humanities: international studies and software systems.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/big-brains-and-a-gold-heart-create-the-perfect-mix-for-graduating-utc-chemistry-student\/\"><strong>Nehemiah Antoine<\/strong><\/a>, a chemistry major and Innovations in Honors member, recently discussed his career path toward medicinal chemistry research.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/capstone-achievement-utcs-emma-sprayberry-lands-fulbright-scholarship\/\"><strong>Emma Sprayberry<\/strong><\/a>, a highly decorated student who recently landed a Fulbright Scholarship to Taiwan, received bachelor\u2019s degrees in humanities: international studies and Spanish.<\/li>\n<li>At 20 years old, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/meet-madison-young-utc-graduate-is-one-to-watch\/\">Madison Cothern<\/a><\/strong> was one of the younger graduates participating in commencement ceremonies. Despite her age, her list of accomplishments does not reflect a lack of experience\u2014as she graduated with about 186 credit hours.<\/li>\n<li>Entrepreneurship major <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/double-the-success-hibbs-twins-journeys-toward-graduation\/\"><strong>Mitchell Hibbs<\/strong><\/a>, an Innovations in Honors member, spent his college years in the UTC Honors College alongside his twin sister, Meaghan. Photo by Lane Gutridge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another graduating student, Caroline Dale, was singled out during the Saturday morning ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Dale, the immediate past president of the UTC Alumni Board of Directors, was one of the platform party members who provided remarks. It gave him an opportunity to welcome UTC\u2019s newest graduates to the alumni process.<\/p>\n<p>It also afforded him the chance to recognize his youngest daughter, Caroline, the recipient of a bachelor\u2019s degree in communication.<\/p>\n<p>He joked before the ceremony began that he was able to embarrass his oldest daughter, Emma, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2022\/12\/fathers-day-commencement-gives-dad-chance-to-embarrass-daughter\/\"><strong>at the December 2022 commencement<\/strong><\/a>, \u201cand I wasn\u2019t going to miss the opportunity to embarrass my youngest daughter, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After sharing his family\u2019s UTC story to the audience (he met his wife, Cynthia, when both were UTC students and their daughters went to the University), it was time to go 2-for-2 as a proud dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing works out such that exactly 30 years (after receiving his bachelor\u2019s degree in finance), you get to have this moment where you get to embarrass your youngest daughter, Caroline, who is graduating today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery father has to embarrass their child. This is my last chance to do that at school,\u201d he said. \u201cSo Caroline Dale, if you\u2019ll please stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crowd applauded. Mission accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>This was the 263rd overall commencement for the University, founded in 1886 as the then-private Chattanooga University.
