When Will Davis walks into class on the first day of each semester, he is usually introducing himself to around 15 strangers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at them and wonder, \u2018Who are you?\u2019\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Last semester, Davis\u2014the PodLab manager and instructor of the honors-level \u201cStorytelling with Podcasts\u201d class at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u2014was able to learn a little more about each of his students as they did about each other.<\/p>\n

He first gave his students a survey, asking them about their stances on topics such as social and economic policies and religion. The students answered on a scale of \u201cmost liberal\u201d to \u201cmost conservative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Using the results of the surveys, he paired the students who represented opposing viewpoints on a specific topic.<\/p>\n

Then, the pairs sat down for a 30-minute recorded conversation in the PodLab<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

After recording, the students cut them into three-and-a-half-minute podcasts, which will air on WUTC-FM 88.1<\/a><\/strong>, UTC\u2019s National Public Radio station, beginning this week.<\/p>\n

The introduction, recorded by students David Elliott and Sylvia Denton, explained the premise.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial media often highlights what makes us different, so we decided to turn off our phones and learn who we are as people,\u201d Denton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we found out that we\u2019re not so different after all,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cEach episode, we sit down and listen to each other\u2019s stories; not what we believe, but why we believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis said the idea stemmed from a 2022 project when the UTC Podlab was selected as one of six sites to host \u201cOne Small Step\u201d by StoryCorps. The project brought together two strangers with opposing political views for a 50-minute discussion about something other than politics.<\/p>\n

Excited by the project\u2019s outcome, he decided to integrate it into the classroom. Last year, Davis\u2019s PodLab created \u201cTennessee Valley Across the Table,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> a podcast featuring members of UTC and the Chattanooga community that followed the same format as \u201cOne Small Step.\u201d<\/p>\n

His students were given 22 hours of conversation to edit into 22, four-minute segments that aired on WUTC.<\/p>\n

This year, students worked on another podcast, exclusively spotlighting their own voices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were some students that participated in the \u2018Across the Table\u2019 podcast,\u201d Davis said. \u201cThose were my favorite, so I thought, \u2018I want to do this again with students.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The students called it \u201cTennessee Valley Crossroads,\u201d a fitting name for a podcast about coming together despite political or religious differences\u2014with a wink and a nod to UTC\u2019s Crossroads Dining Hall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Come on you guys. Quit it,\u2019\u201d Davis said about when he first heard their name idea. \u201cThen I was like, \u2018Oh…yeah. It\u2019s perfect.\u2019 They have a sense of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the podcast is a conversation, not a debate. He explained the psychological contact hypothesis\u2014the idea that the more contact people have with one another, the harder it is to hold prejudice against them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith conversations and sharing stories, you find the humanity in each other,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re looking for similarities. If it\u2019s a debate, you\u2019re coming from a place of division and disagreement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis said he saw the value in a podcast that could connect students with one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an election year, so there\u2019s going to be so much division,\u201d he said. \u201cSomething that\u2019s happened since we started this project, and something that I keep thinking about, is how far division and unrest on campuses can go.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to create a culture of empathy and understanding among students\u2014and that\u2019s what this is about. It\u2019s a David and Goliath battle but the idea is that it\u2019s one small step.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two podcast participants included senior communication student Ava Nessell and senior computer science major Adriel Poo Armas.<\/p>\n

The two sat next to each other in class but had never met prior.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was really interesting to sit down and have a conversation with Adriel,\u201d said Nessell, a graduate of Sale Creek High School. \u201cWe sat next to each other the whole semester. That is definitely the most in-depth conversation we\u2019ve had and we\u2019re so much alike.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of a structured \u201cquestion and answer\u201d format, Poo Armas described the session as a loosely guided conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an honors seminar, I feel like it\u2019s a safe environment to open up and have these conversations,\u201d said Poo Armas, who\u2014as a child\u2014immigrated with his family from Cuba to Tampa, Florida. \u201cI\u2019m not saying we\u2019re all the same, but if you don\u2019t believe what I believe, we\u2019re all pretty open and can understand where each other is coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nessell said her conversation with Poo Armas mainly focused on religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about our belief system and how growing up a Christian would influence how we got to where we are and how we think now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t about religion or political beliefs itself,\u201d Poo Armas added. \u201cIt was about the buildup of our belief systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nessell explained that no part of their conversation was confrontational.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just harmony and agreement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Maggie Leslie, a business management junior from Cleveland, Tennessee, said that she felt slightly nervous leading up to the recorded conversation with her partner, William Bumcum.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne anxiety I had was talking about my personal beliefs and being transparent because normally that\u2019s something that I like to keep to myself,\u201d Leslie said. \u201cBefore recording, we had exchanged maybe two words. It was really interesting to sit down with someone you see a lot but don\u2019t really talk to that much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nessell, who facilitated Leslie and Bumcum\u2019s conversation, agreed that the lead-up to the podcast recording was a bit nerve-racking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is such an anxiety about sharing how you feel because you don\u2019t want to rock the boat,\u201d Nessell said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to cause a fuss, but I think it\u2019s so important to be transparent with people that you\u2019re close to. It\u2019s important to understand why people think the way they do.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis environment is a great way to share viewpoints without being confrontational.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said that by facilitating and participating in conversations, she feels a bit closer to her peers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was very interesting to know more about (Leslie) even though we never had much of a conversation before,\u201d Nessell said. \u201cI know how to approach her better.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot more about Adriel now. I know a lot more about where he came from. It\u2019s really interesting and it\u2019s definitely going to shape future conversations. I feel like we\u2019re forming a friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the recording concluded, Davis said a change happened in his students.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter they had done the recordings, the students told me that when they would come to class, they put their computers and phones away,\u201d he said. \u201cThey came in and would talk to each other and be present with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis also noticed a change within himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is really good,\u201d he said about the podcast. \u201cI am getting better. I can get much better. I have to move through life like, \u2018OK, let\u2019s find what we have in common. We may be different, but we can have a shared experience somewhere.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
