In an effort to keep up with the rapid changes in\u00a0 technology, the UTC Department of Computer Science and Engineering now offers a new program to accelerate admission of non-Computer Science majors into the MSC Computer Science focused on career preparation and industry needs.<\/p>\n
The new\u00a0 program allows students whose first degrees are not in computer science but\u00a0 are interested in a master\u2019s degree in computer science to take three prerequisite courses instead of the usual six. After completing the prerequisite courses, the student receives full graduate student standing and usually completes the program in an additional four\u00a0 semesters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started offering the accelerated program because we saw an increased number of students who were interested in the computer science, but didn\u2019t have the time or the resources to complete the traditional program,\u201d Dr. Li Yang, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator in the UTC Department of Computer Science and Engineering, said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother driving force behind the program is job opportunities.\u00a0 Area employers are telling us they need well-trained students for jobs and internships right now. The accelerated program allows students to graduate and enter the work force faster,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n
The program is focused on providing students with a well-rounded experience in computer science field with classes in information security, software development, and computer programming.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur program is dynamic. We regularly revise our curriculum to make it more attractive to prospective students and to meet the needs of the industry,\u201d Yang said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the program has 11 students. Yi Jiang enrolled in the program this fall.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy experience in this program is great so far. The faculty is friendly and willing to help. They care a lot about the students, helping them on not only their study, but also their career preparation. I think this valuable program is especially suitable for those who don\u2019t have a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science, but want to get a master\u2019s degree and start a career in the computer science or multi-disciplinary fields,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
