Chello Gardner was up bright and early for the 7:45 a.m. check-in <\/span>at<\/span> Lupton Hall.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a group leader for United Way of Greater Chattanooga\u2019s Day of Caring, she joined fellow University of Tennessee at Chattanooga students, faculty and staff during the service initiative on Friday, Sept. 20.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Groups of volunteers went to six Hamilton County locations\u2014including Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Red Bank Middle School, YMCA, CHATT Foundation, <\/span>Normal Park<\/span> Trail<\/span> and UTC\u2019s campus\u2014to participate in service activities such as cleaning, sorting, painting, mowing, mulching and writing cards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care what time service is,\u201d said Gardner, a senior communication major from Memphis. \u201cIf you tell me it\u2019s at six o\u2019clock in the morning, I will be there at six o\u2019clock in the morning ready for service.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love giving back to the community.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Grzesik, director of Leadership Development and Programs in the UTC Office of Housing and Residence Life, said that registration doubled from last year\u2019s Day of Caring with about 75 volunteers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are Chattanooga\u2019s University,\u201d Grzesik said, \u201cso that means we\u2019ve got to engage and we\u2019ve got to make a difference. We\u2019re excited to do that with the community.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grace Affoumou, a sophomore environmental science major from Nashville, said she chose to volunteer for more service experiences in her new community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here because I wanted to give back,\u201d Affoumou said. \u201cI do community service in Nashville, and I haven\u2019t really done any in Chattanooga, so it\u2019s a perfect opportunity to do it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Participating in the Day of Caring was of utmost importance to Vice Chancellor for Access and Engagement Stacy Lightfoot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lightfoot, born and raised in Chattanooga, said her entire life has been dedicated to community service. She even briefly moved to Jamaica, where she received a master\u2019s degree in international service.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope today that you walk out of those doors as proud Mocs, representing what it means to be part of Chattanooga\u2019s University and to serve a community that I call home,\u201d Lightfoot said in a welcome speech to the volunteers at the program kickoff in Lupton Hall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou could be anywhere else this morning, but you chose to be here today. I cannot wait for you to come back and I\u2019m excited talking about where you are, what you\u2019ve done and how you\u2019ve changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
