William Inge\u2019s \u201cBus Stop,\u201d a quintessentially American story about bus passengers stranded by a blizzard in a diner, is coming to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Fine Arts Center\u2019s Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre stage.<\/p>\n

Performed by the UTC Theatre Co., \u201cBus Stop\u201d runs at 7:30 p.m. from Nov. 19-23\u2014with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Nov. 23.<\/p>\n

The UTC Fine Arts Center is located at the intersection of Dr. Roland Carter Street (formerly known as Vine Street) and Palmetto Street on the UTC campus.<\/p>\n

Written in 1955, \u201cBus Stop\u201d premiered on Broadway the following year and earned four Tony Award nominations. Blending humor and drama, the production explores themes of love, isolation and self-discovery, offering a timeless reflection on the human experience.<\/p>\n

Inge (1913-1973), known as the \u201cPlaywright of the Midwest,\u201d captured the lives of ordinary Americans with realism and empathy. In addition to \u201cBus Stop,\u201d he achieved acclaim in the 1950s with works like \u201cPicnic\u201d and \u201cCome Back, Little Sheba,\u201d winning both a Pulitzer Prize and an Academy Award.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe story weaves together the lives of eight different characters on this snowy Sunday morning in March 1955 in a little corner diner in the middle of nowhere Kansas,\u201d said Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Acting Concentration Anne Swedberg\u2014the director of the UTC Theatre Co. production.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mark of the 1950s is definitely in this play\u2014everything from a telephone that\u2019s mounted on the wall and is a landline and rings, to some of the conventions of speech, to some of the things that people say, to some of the gender roles that are typical of the era\u2014but of course we\u2019re doing it in 2024. We\u2019ve blended some of those crisscrosses so that it\u2019s still a period piece.\u201d<\/p>\n
