Photo courtesy of Jeremiah Taylor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Jeremiah Taylor was in high school at the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, attending college at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wasn\u2019t on his list of plans.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI really didn\u2019t want to be across the street for another four years,\u201d Taylor said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He chose the University of Memphis, but after two years of online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to return home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Saturday, Dec. 14, Taylor will graduate from UTC with his degree in civil engineering. Reflecting on his experience at the University, he said he wouldn\u2019t change a thing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUTC embraced me,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the moment I transferred, I felt supported by the people here\u2014whether it was professors, staff or fellow students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">===============================================================<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement-2024\/\">Click here for more UTC Commencement 2024 stories<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">===============================================================<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taylor didn\u2019t hesitate when it came to finding his place on campus. In his first week at UTC, he helped prospective students by becoming a tour guide.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m a huge advocate for college and for people to find their passion,\u201d he said. \u201cFor a lot of students, it\u2019s a nerve-wracking experience, and I enjoy showing them that there\u2019s a place for everyone here.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also joined the Eta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which he became president of in 2023. The society, founded in 1975, provides members with leadership training, professional development, mentoring and career placement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As president, he worked to organize events such as workshops, guest speakers and career development activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBeing president kept me busy, but it was so rewarding,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was all about creating a safe space where we could stay connected and support each other\u2014not just with academics but as people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also served as a First Year Experience mentor, in which he helped to support and connect first-year students on campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been the kind of person who wants to help others whenever I can, and that\u2019s exactly what this role was about,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was all about building relationships and figuring out how to be the kind of support someone needs, even if they don\u2019t know how to ask for it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These are just a few of Taylor\u2019s involvements at UTC. He also sang in the Littleton H. Mason Singers gospel choir, was a member of Brother 2 Brother\u2014a national student organization that supports the academic and personal success of African American and Hispanic\/Latino males\u2014and served as an engineering ambassador.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCollege is one of those times where you figure out your values and what really matters to you,\u201d he said. \u201cThrough everything I\u2019ve been involved in, I\u2019ve learned so much about myself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cGetting involved helped me push myself and find out who I am. It\u2019s been a great experience\u2014probably the biggest part of my college experience\u2014and now I feel like I\u2019m ready for the next chapter.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After earning his degree, Taylor will begin working as a civil engineer at Kimley-Horn, an international engineering design firm in Chattanooga. He said his ultimate goal is to become a general contractor and help build homes for people in need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thinking back to his first few weeks at UTC, he recalled those who provided immediate mentorship when he needed it most, such as Multicultural Affairs Assistant Director Christopher Stokes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI went to the office, met him, and the rest was history,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom then he plugged me into different organizations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe (Multicultural Center) is the reason why I\u2019ve been so involved and active\u2014and I can say that after two and a half years, I feel like I\u2019ve made my mark here at UTC and made the most of it, even though I transferred here.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stokes commended Taylor for his willingness to participate in a wide range of campus organizations and activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJeremiah Taylor has made a tremendous impact as a transfer to UTC,\u201d Stokes said. \u201cHe immediately jumped in within his first week as a volunteer within our department and explored areas on how he could connect to campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe has become a favorite for many students, faculty and staff for his courage, determination, genuine personality and sincerity.
