Dr.<\/span> Azad Hossain remembered being a Ph.D. student in the early 2000s visiting the American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference, where he nervously but carefully explained his research to world-renowned scientists and researchers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as<\/span> an associate professor of geology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he is making sure his undergraduate students are getting the same opportunity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In December, Hossain\u2014along with senior environmental science majors Anna <\/span>Sherrill<\/span> and Nicklaus Kuntzman\u2014traveled to Washington, D.C., for the AGU 2024 conference\u2014where over 25,000 scientists from <\/span>100-plus<\/span> countries gathered to share their ideas and research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a student, there isn\u2019t a better place than AGU,\u201d Hossain said. \u201cYou see Nobel laureates who are coming and presenting and all the pioneers in science in your field.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their research, titled \u201cDeveloping Models to Estimate Chlorophyll-<\/span>a<\/span><\/i> in the Tennessee River Using Remote Sensing,\u201d uses satellite imagery from NASA\u2019s Landsat program alongside water samples collected from the Tennessee River to estimate water quality indicators like chlorophyll and turbidity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy responsibility was conducting a literature review, focusing on estimating chlorophyll using Landsat,\u201d said Sherrill, who hails from Charleston, South Carolina. \u201cI looked at about 100 papers revolving around chlorophyll estimation and going through it to find what models work and didn\u2019t work\u2014and how we can apply that to our project.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kuntzman explained the hands-on aspects of the project, which involved both fieldwork and data analysis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe would bring water sensors out on a boat and collect different water quality parameters like chlorophyll, pH and temperature,\u201d said Kuntzman, a Memphis native. \u201cThen we take that data, run analysis on it in Excel and make regressions with it\u2014then try to make an equation that we can apply to our ArcGIS software.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trip was partially funded <\/span>by a <\/span>$299,998 NASA ROSES (Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science) grant<\/span><\/b><\/a>, which Hossain received last year to support a project he was the principal investigator of titled \u201cRemote Sensing of Water Quality in the Tennessee River.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The students recognized the importance of this research to a city like Chattanooga, which is rapidly growing in population and on its way to becoming a national park city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur city is only going to get bigger and the water quality is just going to keep going down,\u201d Kuntzman said, \u201cso we can go back and use historical data. It\u2019ll be interesting to see how our water quality has been changing over the years and then see how it\u2019ll change in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe model, although it is being used for the Tennessee River, can be applied to other rivers and help cities determine what\u2019s going on with their water quality.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain described the trip as a last-minute adventure. Despite juggling final exams, the three worked to quickly secure more funding and prepare for a successful trip.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to <\/span>Sherrill,<\/span> who reached out to <\/span>UTC\u2019s Office<\/span> of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavor (URaCE) for additional support, the trip became possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe hardest thing is getting over there,\u201d <\/span>Sherrill<\/span> said. \u201cThe fact that our school offers these resources is great and <\/span>(URaCE Executive Director)<\/span> Lisa Piazza was so helpful in the process. I definitely encourage other students to take advantage of it because you can go so many places with their support.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain shared the importance of the conference for his students, describing it as an experience that \u201csparks magic.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important for students to get this experience,\u201d he said. \u201cThey realized what kind of work they were doing when people came by and made comments on their poster. It\u2019s a very valuable experience.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sherrill<\/span> expressed her awe at the size of the conference and the opportunities it provided.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI took a picture of the whole poster room, and it goes on forever<\/span>\u2014you can\u2019t see the end of it,\u201d she said. \u201cGoing through all of the posters and seeing what they\u2019re doing, and then also realizing, \u2018Oh, I have my name on one of the posters,\u2019 was really cool.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kuntzman reflected on what it meant to him and <\/span>Sherrill<\/span> as undergraduate students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got there, I was almost emotional sometimes, thinking, \u2018Woah, look at me. I\u2019m really here,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt inspired me to further go into research and my education.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain praised his students for their contributions to the research and for their hard work\u2014not only at the conference but also in the effort it took to get there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you do something like this, preparing things can be stressful, but they sustained it and did it,\u201d Hossain said. \u201cThey saw firsthand what it means to be part of the scientific community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
