Excitement and eagerness filled the air at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Saturday, April 5, as hundreds of prospective students and their families explored campus during Blue and Gold Preview Day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual event gave future Mocs a chance to meet with academic departments, take campus tours, explore student services and start imagining themselves at UTC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to meeting all of my future classmates,\u201d said Avery Cross, a senior from Fayetteville, Tennessee, who plans to study nursing at UTC this fall. \u201cIt\u2019s fun and kind of nerve-wracking, but it\u2019s comforting to see that all these people here are going through the same thing.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her mom, Ashley Fugate, appreciated the opportunity to picture her daughter in Chattanooga.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my first visit,\u201d Fugate said. \u201cI haven\u2019t been (to Chattanooga) in years and I just want to take it all in. I want to see where she\u2019s going to be living and just get my bearings so I can picture her here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ansh Parihar, from Page High School in Franklin, Tennessee, will also be on campus as a full-time student in a few months.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an admitted student here and coming in the fall,\u201d Parihar said. \u201cI\u2019m checking out the computer science program because that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to major in. I\u2019m just getting a feel for everything and checking everything out.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bonnie Parihar, his mom, was anxious but excited to attend the Blue and Gold Preview Day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s our first visit here,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel a little bit better after visiting the campus. Before, you always have a thousand questions in your mind because your son is going out of the house and staying by himself for the first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always scary, but there\u2019s a good vibe after visiting the campus.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a common experience for many of the parents in attendance, according to Rachel Collins\u2014who joined the event with her son, Cooper Collins. Cooper, whose older sister attends UTC, was interested in learning about the music therapy program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, it\u2019s not very far but far enough. They have independence but we\u2019re close enough if there\u2019s an emergency,\u201d said Rachel, a resident of Tullahoma, Tennessee. \u201cUTC has really good bang for your buck. You\u2019re not spending a massive amount of money out of your pocket, but you\u2019re getting a good education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s well supported and they\u2019ve got a lot of diversity in their degree programs. It\u2019s also a really safe campus. These are the things parents look at.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jayla Gilbert, also a soon-to-be student joining in the fall, plans to major in middle grades education: social sciences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI chose UTC because it\u2019s really affordable,\u201d Gilbert said. \u201cIt has a really good atmosphere and a bunch of my friends are coming here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Will Scannapiego, a transfer student from Cleveland State Community College, came with his parents, Ede and Ken Scannapiego\u2014who is also the associate director of UTC\u2019s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to nail down specifically what major I\u2019m going to do today,\u201d said Will, who is the youngest of four children.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of relieving,\u201d Ken said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a 27-year-old come through and now a 19-year-old, and seeing it come to fruition is nice.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Scannapiegos brought along their friend Jennifer Caldwell and her son, Levi Caldwell, a transfer from Chattanooga State Community College, to check out the Gary W. Rollins College of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy oldest went into welding and my middle is going to be a lineman,\u201d Jennifer said. \u201cSo this is really my first experience with UTC and we\u2019re really excited to be here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Peyton Harris, a junior who attends high school in Atlanta, came with plans for graduate school already in mind. He is interested in UTC\u2019s exercise science program and hopes to eventually join the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI did some research online,\u201d Harris said. \u201cI saw this campus and saw they have my major. I thought it would be a good school to come to.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s bittersweet,\u201d said his mom, Gail Harris, who also has two older children. \u201cOnce he leaves the nest, that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Angela Alvinez, from Morristown, Tennessee, is interested in biomedical engineering and eventually going to medical school. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited about Chattanooga because I don\u2019t really come up here,\u201d Alvinez said. \u201cI\u2019m usually either in Knoxville or in Atlanta. I\u2019m excited for the vibe here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
