Dr. Azad Hossain didn\u2019t expect to hear from NASA, so when an email from NASA\u2019s Science Systems and Applications Inc. showed up in his inbox, he took a second look.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have any idea,\u201d said Hossain, an environmental geoscientist and associate professor in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science. \u201cI saw the email come through and I couldn\u2019t understand it. I looked closer and thought, \u2018OK, this is interesting. I need to respond.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That email turned into a full interview and collaboration that led to Hossain\u2019s research projects being featured as <\/span>NASA\u2019s Earth Observatory \u201cImage of the Day.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/a> The article, \u201cBuilding Out Chattanooga,\u201d compares satellite images of Chattanooga from 2001 and 2024 to show how much the city has grown.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain said NASA was intrigued by his use of Landsat, an Earth-observing satellite program launched in the 1970s by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. The satellite takes images of the Earth\u2019s surface, documenting its changes over time. There have been nine Landsat satellites launched since the program\u2019s origin, with significant technological improvements with each launch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain recalled using Landsat data for his master\u2019s thesis in the late \u201990s when the technology was slow and expensive. Now, data access is free and near instantaneous.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAround that time, I was in charge of mapping the Bay of Bengal near the Indian Ocean,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt took more than two months to get the image. It was a great day for everyone in our group just to be able to see the image.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I tell you now that we need to get a Landsat scene today for Chattanooga, after one hour, I can show you the image.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another reason for the selection of Hossain\u2019s research, he said, was Chattanooga\u2019s recent designation as North America\u2019s first National Park City.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cChattanooga is a unique place. If you look for urbanization, you\u2019ll find it here,\u201d Hossain said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the basis for his research. Hossain came to UTC in 2016 and quickly saw a need for more research into Chattanooga\u2019s growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things when I joined UTC was urbanization, urban canopies, urban heat islands, landslides\u2014but there weren\u2019t any published articles for that,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have anything published, you can\u2019t be part of an effective dialogue.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the help of UTC students and colleagues, Hossain began tracking the region\u2019s growth using satellite data. One of his first graduate students, Jonah Hall, co-authored a paper with Hossain that used Landsat to show how Chattanooga changed between 1986 and 2016.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The research also looked at development around major creeks and streams which shows how urbanization can impact local waterways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were able to put numbers to it,\u201d Hossain said. \u201cThat was the first time we had data showing how much growth had happened and where.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding how Chattanooga is growing and how that growth affects the local environment has been a primary goal of Hossain\u2019s research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we know the relationship between this growth and our environment, we\u2019d be able to do it in a sustainable manner and make everybody happy,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing here with Landsat gives us confidence. It gives us the feeling that what we\u2019re doing is important\u2014not just for us, but for others to see and follow. Chattanooga, we call it a smart city. We call it the Scenic City.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s Earth Observatory article links to previous research by Hossain and his co-authors. He was quick to credit their role in reaching this point.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not only for me,\u201d he said of the NASA recognition. \u201cIt\u2019s the work I did, but it\u2019s also my students\u2019 work. When I got this article published, I was in class and I told my students, \u2018Look, this is public. You can go there and see it.\u2019 I feel pretty good. I\u2019m sure they also feel good.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hossain said his goal has always been to do research that\u2019s both useful and accessible, and to help train the next generation to keep it going.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe like complex research, but sometimes it doesn\u2019t need to be complex,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can solve things using simple techniques and understand things better. And that\u2019s what this work shows.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
