Hamilton County is home <\/span>to numerous<\/span> parks, trails, playgrounds, ball fields, dog parks and greenways.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many residents enjoy these spaces but may not think twice about who maintains them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This summer, three students from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga set out to change that, using their internships with Hamilton County Parks and Recreation to document the people behind the scenes who keep it all running.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through a series of on-camera interviews, the project\u2014titled \u201cOur Parks, Our People\u201d\u2014highlighted park staff, maintenance workers, city officials, event organizers and <\/span>others<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are showing off the people that make the parks happen and the locations that people can go to enjoy time in the parks,\u201d said Alex Harris, a rising sophomore from Hendersonville, Tennessee. \u201cIt\u2019s so important that the community is actively engaged with their environment and their city.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe best way to do <\/span>that is showing<\/span> off those places, <\/span>and\u2014more importantly\u2014showing<\/span> off the people that make that happen.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harris, who majors in both political science and history, described it as a \u201cpassion project\u201d by Karen <\/span>Shostak<\/span>, the deputy director of Hamilton County Parks and Recreation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs Karen always says, they do so much more than just cut grass,\u201d Harris said during a day of filming at the Tennessee Riverpark. \u201cIt takes a lot to make this happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Though Abigail Borden is originally from Dyersburg, Tennessee, the rising sophomore said she has lived in Chattanooga since early childhood. She said it has been eye-opening to learn how much local parks have grown and changed, even for people who\u2019ve lived here for years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She mentioned the recent upgrades to Chester Frost Park in nearby Hixson, which include a dog park and new boat ramps.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who live here that don\u2019t usually go to the parks don\u2019t know about that,\u201d said Borden, an <\/span>anthropology major and Brock Scholar in the UTC Honors College<\/span>. \u201cWe\u2019re wanting to showcase what\u2019s been improved and show who\u2019s behind the camera and their passions for their job.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also part of the team was Gabriel Ghani, a rising junior majoring in philosophy, who most often served as the videographer on the project, carrying the camera and capturing footage during interviews and site visits.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He shared that he and his team members heard of the opportunity from the <\/span>Tennessee Youth Employment Program<\/span><\/b><\/a>, a state-funded initiative that places students in paid internships with local <\/span>government departments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat kind of job, working with the county during college, is something that is beautiful,\u201d said Ghani, who came to UTC from <\/span>S\u00e3o<\/span> Paulo, Brazil. \u201cEspecially seeing how much it takes to make it work. I feel like that\u2019s the importance of making these videos.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ghani explained why learning about the parks and green spaces is especially interesting to him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m from a big city where there\u2019s barely any trees. It\u2019s a concrete jungle,\u201d he said. \u201cComing here, what really got me to fall in love with the city was hiking. Being able to be a part of that is awesome.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love meeting people. With this project, the people that work for the parks are very passionate about what they do. That\u2019s magnificent because it\u2019s always awesome to hear people talking about things they geek out on.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harris said the project hit close to home for him. He\u2019s always felt connected to the outdoors, so working on-site in the parks was a special experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always loved going to parks. I\u2019ve always had an attachment to them,\u201d Harris said. \u201cSo getting to work in that setting and getting to meet the people who make it all <\/span>happen has<\/span> been really humbling.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the final interviews the students conducted was with Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInterviewing Weston Wamp was incredibly interesting. That process involved a little more planning than our typical interviews,\u201d Borden said. \u201cHe was kind enough to come speak to all of the interns for the Tennessee Youth Employment Program, which covers many departments within the Hamilton County government. We interviewed him afterwards, and he spoke passionately about the importance of parks to our community and economy.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cOur Parks, Our People\u201d series has debuted on the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation website<\/b><\/a><\/span>. New episodes will be released weekly throughout the summer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Borden described the project as a \u201cbeautiful representation\u201d of the work the department does. It also gave her, Harris and Ghani a chance to form a close bond while working in some of Chattanooga\u2019s most beautiful areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no other group of people I would have chosen to share this journey with and grow closer to over these past few months,\u201d she said. \u201cThe experience enhanced my appreciation for this beautiful place we call home, and for all of those who work every day to maintain and improve it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
