University of Tennessee at Chattanooga police officer<\/span> Ellen Centers has an alter ego.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she\u2019s off duty, Centers becomes \u201cAdrenellen,\u201d a jammer for Chattanooga Roller Derby.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several nights a week, Centers can be found rollerblading around the Orange Grove Center gym during practices.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She first got into roller derby six years ago while her husband was deployed. She was at CrossFit when she noticed another woman\u2019s jersey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt said, \u2018Joya Destroya,\u2019\u201d Centers said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Do you play roller derby?\u2019 She said she did. It was the beginning of roller derby for me. I went to practice that Sunday and never stopped.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Centers<\/span> now skates with Chattanooga Roller Derby and is part of the league\u2019s home team, the Little Debbie Downers. Her main role is jamming\u2014dodging, weaving and pushing through the pack to score points\u2014but she also takes turns blocking and pivoting when needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a demanding sport, both physically and mentally.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been elbowed in the nose, I\u2019ve been shouldered in the jaw and poked in the eyeball,\u201d she said with a laugh, pointing to her visor, \u201cwhich is why I\u2019m wearing this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Roller derby has a lot in common with police work, she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s things that I pull from it that I take with me every day, even at work,\u201d she said. \u201cYou get hit hard, you have to keep your cool, get back up and keep going.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Centers joined the UTC Police Department in early 2024 after going through the police academy and field training. According to UTC Police Chief Sean O\u2019Brien, the same strengths that serve her on the track are what make her stand out in uniform.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s young in her law enforcement career,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cShe has such an appetite for learning her profession and always has a positive attitude. You always know when she\u2019s walked into the room. She\u2019s very affable, approachable and high energy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to see that in our profession. Sometimes it\u2019s hard to get folks excited about the work we do.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Centers said a major motivator is serving her community. This is another similarity between her career and the game.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel roller derby is very empowering,\u201d she said. \u201cWe give back to charities. It\u2019s just a really good way to continue to stay supportive in the community.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

UTC Deputy Chief Matthew Holzmacher<\/span> noticed this quality. Before becoming a police officer, <\/span>Centers<\/span> worked for a security company that the police department contracted for events.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe is really engaged with community members,\u201d Holzmacher said. \u201cThat\u2019s something we take note of … somebody coming to our events or a graduation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome of it is her natural personality, but she was a great representative of the University from the very beginning.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to her patrol duties, Centers is a certified instructor in <\/span>UTC\u2019s Rape Aggression Defense program. R.A.D.<\/span> offers self-defense training for female students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHer position as the R.A.D. instructor has really opened up an entirely new opportunity for community engagement for us,\u201d Holzmacher said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the mentality behind roller derby and policing mirrors <\/span>one another<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy first two years of skating, I had tunnel vision,\u201d <\/span>Centers<\/span> said. \u201cEverything kind of closes in and all you see is what\u2019s right in front of you. That happens and you\u2019re faced with, \u2018OK, I need to make this quick decision and your heart is pounding.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why her team trains three nights a week\u2014to develop the \u201cmuscle memory\u201d and make the right moves under pressure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite a demanding schedule as a full-time police officer and the rigorous roller derby training, the sport is a critical component of her life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a healthy outlet for me to take the edge off of the emotions that I\u2019m dealing with or whatever it may be,\u201d she said. \u201cIt keeps me grounded.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
