{"id":69936,"date":"2025-08-18T07:43:01","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T11:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/?p=69936"},"modified":"2025-09-03T09:06:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T13:06:56","slug":"mocs-express-makes-it-easier-than-ever-to-get-around-utc-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogarchive.utc.edu\/news\/2025\/08\/mocs-express-makes-it-easier-than-ever-to-get-around-utc-and-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"Mocs Express makes it easier than ever to get around UTC and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe title=\"Mocs Express; UTC&#039;s Campus Shuttle\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mqXDnF5Gxnk?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A seat on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/finance-and-administration\/auxiliary-services\/parking-services\/campus-shuttle\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mocs Express<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u2019s shuttle system\u2014is always free.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The shuttle system, run in partnership with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), has been serving UTC for more than a decade and is free to all students, faculty and staff with a Mocs ID.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brandon Meredith, CARTA\u2019s director of communications and external relations\u2014and a parent of a current UTC student\u2014acknowledged how often students overlook the service.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen my daughter started at UTC three years ago, she had a bus stop right in front of her house,\u201d Meredith said. \u201cI asked her, \u2018Do you ever take the bus?\u2019 She said she had no idea the bus even went there.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI asked if any of the students take it. She\u2019s like, \u2018They just drive everywhere.\u2019 But then she complains about parking.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meredith explained that the Mocs Express runs Monday through Saturday during the school year, with buses that are fully wheelchair accessible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">*************<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/finance-and-administration\/auxiliary-services\/parking-services\/campus-shuttle\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Click here<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for more information, including Mocs Express shuttle stops and routes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">*************<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left\">If parking is hard to find on campus, Lot 45 near Engel Stadium is usually open, and a Mocs Express stop is conveniently nearby at Mocs Alumni Drive and O\u2019Neal Street.<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Braden Stillwell, a 2024 UTC graduate and CARTA transportation planning intern, said that it&#8217;s a great option for students who don\u2019t want to circle around campus looking for a parking spot.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf you want to ensure that you\u2019re going to get a spot, I think Engel Stadium is a perfect place to park,\u201d said Stillwell, who served as UTC\u2019s student body vice president. \u201cYou can just take the shuttle, and it will always get you to where you need to go.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He encouraged students to not feel too intimidated even if they have never ridden on public transportation before.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere are students who have been raised with a negative perception of public transportation,\u201d he said, \u201cbut after they try it, they say that the bus driver was sweet and helpful.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meredith attested to this. Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>This fall, a fourth shuttle will reduce weekday wait times from seven minutes to just four, making the ride even more convenient. And the Mocs Express isn\u2019t the only option; all CARTA buses are free for UTC students.<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe good thing about UTC is its location in proximity to our routes,\u201d Meredith said. \u201cUTC students are within walking distance from most of our main routes.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To make the system easier to use, he recommended bookmarking the CARTA Bus Tracker on a mobile device.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLet\u2019s say someone wanted to track the 14 route Mocs Express bus,\u201d Meredith explained. \u201cThey could just put in \u2018route 14,\u2019 and that is a real-time bus tracker so they can follow the bus and figure out when it\u2019s going to be at their stop.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While onboard the Mocs Express, a few students shared their perspectives of what it\u2019s like to ride the shuttle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t\u2019s way faster than walking and I don\u2019t have to worry about how much time I need between classes to walk,\u201d said sophomore biology major Danae Hopkins, a Chattanooga native. \u201cWhen I found out there was a bus I was excited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;It\u2019s really easy once you learn all the stops and everything.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For physics major Belle White, a junior from Cleveland, Tennessee, the Mocs Express provides an added sense of security.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cEspecially during the evening, I feel safer riding the bus than when I am walking home,\u201d White said. \u201cPart of it is because some of my classes are a long walk to get there, so the buses take me there quicker than I could walk there.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nathanial Bumpers, a sophomore entrepreneurship major from Birmingham, Alabama, said the shuttle helps him get to class comfortably.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy classes are pretty scattered across campus and sometimes it\u2019s just a lot easier to take the bus rather than get to class out of breath,\u201d Bumpers said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meredith had a word of advice to students who are still nervous about the campus shuttle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cMy recommendation would be just to try it one time,\u201d he said. \u201cI think you\u2019ll find how easy it is. The Mocs Express buses are some of our newest and cleanest buses on the routes. I think if you ride it one time, you\u2019re going to be like, &#8216;Wow, this is so easy.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70027\" updated weekend route.<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe route that I completely redesigned is the route 14 weekend route,\u201d Stillwell said.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201cPreviously, the weekend route was one of our lowest ridden routes, almost to the point where it was almost cut, but I kind of saw hope in it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The new Friday and Saturday evening route, running from 6 p.m. to midnight, connects campus to Main Street, Central Avenue, Broad Street and more.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This will allow students transportation to places like Food City, Warehouse Row, Stir, Niedlov\u2019s Bakery and Southside Pizza<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhy I think this route is so important is because it is moving student accessibility to places in Chattanooga where students want to go,\u201d Stillwell said. \u201cWe also thought it would be a great idea in the realm of student safety.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Stillwell said the redesign reflects student life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen you think about what students are going to be doing on the weekends, they\u2019re going to be wanting to go out and do something with friends,\u201d he said. \u201cRestaurants and nightlife places around Chattanooga are places that students visit frequently.\u201d<\/span><span
