Meet Gunther\u2014also known as Gunny\u2014the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u2019s first chief canine officer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gunny is a German shorthaired pointer, born in Hungary at a kennel known for breeding hunting dogs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These days, his title at UTC is mostly honorary, but you may have spotted him around campus alongside UTC Police Chief Sean O\u2019Brien.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their partnership began years ago when O\u2019Brien was a lieutenant with the Chattanooga Police Department. A Department of Homeland Security grant funded the purchase of a Vapor Wake\u2013trained K-9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vapor Wake, a scientifically based canine detection method, is an approach that trains dogs to track the scent trail left in the air by a person carrying explosives or other contraband materials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI went down to the training facility in Anniston, Alabama, and the first dog they paired me up with was a cute little black lab from Brazil,\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cShe was a sweet pet, but I\u2019m like, \u2018Hey, this is not going to work. The environment that I will be working in around large crowds and searching in the woods <\/span>… this<\/span> dog won\u2019t work.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were like, \u2018We only have one dog in the kennel and it\u2019s very high energy.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien wanted to see the dog anyway. He quickly realized \u201chigh energy\u201d may have been an understatement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe instructor actually had two leashes on him,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018We don\u2019t know if you can handle this.\u2019 I <\/span>said<\/span>, \u2018Listen, I\u2019ve worked with four other dogs. Give me the leash.\u2019 From there, it was on.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, at 6 years old, Gunny has a much calmer demeanor. <\/span>He\u2019s often found sitting quietly with a toy in his mouth or leaning against someone\u2019s leg to ask for <\/span>attention<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t misjudge him, though. With a list of accomplishments under his collar, Gunny is anything but lazy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien recalled one of Gunny\u2019s first major successes. It involved a stolen car that \u201cshots-fired\u201d suspects had dumped before escaping into the woods.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were thinking there was probably a gun in the woods,\u201d he said. \u201cWe go into the woods and we\u2019re in a gully. It just so happened the breeze was coming in across the gully enough that (Gunny) stuck his nose up above the ridge and took off.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe went about 75 yards, puts his nose on something and he sits. It was the key fob from the car, which had gunpowder residue on it from when they discharged the firearm in the car at somebody.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was then that I knew: This dog is awesome.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He recalled another situation where a shooting suspect crashed on the interstate. Witnesses saw the suspect throwing things down a hill, so O\u2019Brien and Gunny were called to the scene.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They searched the bottom of the hill, but Gunny alerted them to a bush in a different area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018No, no, no. We want to check this whole side of the hill over here,\u2019\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cWe go for about 35 minutes and I put him up. I\u2019m like, \u2018Man, we haven\u2019t found anything.\u2019 The other officers were ready to go.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He decided to give it another try, letting Gunny lead the way.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI gave him enough freedom on a long line that he goes right up to the bush, puts his head in the bush and then sits there,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was the gun. The suspect had run down there and placed it in the bush and then ran back up to where his car had crashed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had listened to him the first time, we would have already found it and been on our way home. But Gunny knew.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are several similar stories that involve Gunny\u2019s powerful nose. In total, he recovered approximately 150 <\/span>firearms<\/span> before retiring in <\/span>late 2023 <\/span>after a cancerous tumor was discovered<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, it was successfully removed and Gunny is in good health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This transition from \u201cworking dog\u201d to \u201cpet\u201d moved O\u2019Brien\u2019s responsibility from \u201chandler\u201d to \u201cdog dad.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take too much adjusting, however, because Gunny was used to living at home with O\u2019Brien.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was unique in that he specifically was intended to be socialized around humans,\u201d he explained, \u201cwhich was the reason for having him in the house with six cats.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, O\u2019Brien and his wife, Janet, are proud owners of six cats\u2014and one Gunny, of course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the house, he pays no mind to them,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cOut and about? Oh no. He\u2019s very interested in cats, just like squirrels.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although retired, Gunny\u2019s instincts haven\u2019t gone away. O\u2019Brien said he doesn\u2019t intentionally use Gunny in working situations anymore, but he still pays attention to his behavior\u2014just in case.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime he sees an officer, right away he\u2019ll go up to their gun and smell,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cThat\u2019s half the reason why, when he\u2019s here, I just let him have the toy, so he\u2019s not as interested in searching. Otherwise, he\u2019d be alerting all the time.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even at home, Gunny has had moments that remind O\u2019Brien of his former job. He recalled a recent moment when Gunny entered the room while his wife was cleaning lenses. Gunny began air scenting and eventually fixated on a bottle of cleaner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI gave him his search command,\u201d he recalled, \u201cand he starts working and comes right up next to the bottle. It had 3% hydrogen peroxide\u2014something they\u2019re trained to alert on and is often used in explosives. I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, you\u2019ve still got it.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though his detection days are mostly behind him, Gunny still draws a crowd, especially on campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien said that bringing Gunny to work was something he had hoped to do when <\/span>he started at UTC in 2024<\/span><\/b><\/a> as associate vice chancellor for public safety and police chief, but he wanted to see how the students would react.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne day I walked across campus in uniform, and you couldn\u2019t get any of the kids to talk to me,\u201d he said. \u201cThe next day, same time, same route, I walked across campus with him and it was the complete opposite.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, he brings Gunny with him a couple of times a week. The reception is so positive that O\u2019Brien is now hoping to secure funding for a designated support or facilities dog.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal would be to have a trained dog on campus specifically to \u201cmake those connections\u201d and \u201cprovide some stress relief,\u201d according to O\u2019Brien.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gunny may be off duty, but he is filling that role in his own way <\/span>as \u201cchief.\u201d He even has<\/span> his own badge and <\/span>staff page.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a softie at heart,\u201d O\u2019Brien said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing people notice is the dog,\u201d he added with a laugh. \u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, I know that dog.\u2019 And then they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Oh, hey Sean, how are you?\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
