Would you pay for ChatGPT if it were $100 a month?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One student quickly shook his head no.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another nodded proudly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This mixed reaction from her students is exactly what Dr. Nagwan Zahry hoped for in the \u201cAI for Everyone\u201d class at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zahry, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, co-teaches the course with <\/span>Dr. Beni Asllani, head of the Department of Data Analytics in the Gary W. Rollins College of Business and Rollins Professor of Artificial Intelligence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea of the class is to have an interdisciplinary approach so we can combine humanities and social sciences with computer science knowledge,\u201d Zahry said. \u201cMost of my sessions are about <\/span>human\/computer<\/span> interaction and the ethical legal use of AI.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her background is in studying how to simplify scientific language and build collaborations across STEM fields. In this course, that means focusing on how people think and feel about AI.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t encourage them to use AI. We encourage them to think critically about AI applications,\u201d Zahry said. \u201cWe\u2019re showing them the pros and cons of using AI.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAI is a social force. It\u2019s a social phenomenon. It\u2019s not just a technology-based innovation, but it\u2019s something that has different implications on social and environmental aspects of life.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Asllani covers the technical side\u2014teaching core AI principles, machine learning concepts and tools such as ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot. He said the course <\/span>received<\/span> strong support from across campus because it meets a growing need.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAI is becoming the new literacy,\u201d Asllani said. \u201cJust like we once had to learn to read and write, do math and learn foreign languages, now we all need to understand how to communicate with AI and use it to become more productive in our personal and professional lives.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zahry said student reactions have been mixed, and that\u2019s part of the point.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTheir main perception was confusion, anxiety about what AI will bring in their future career and how they can deal with all the challenges of learning AI,\u201d Zahry said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, it was graduate assistant Daniel <\/span>Duggin<\/span> who helped build the class from the ground up.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As an undergraduate, Duggin\u2014<\/span>who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science in 2024<\/span>\u2014worked on UTC\u2019s AI initiative and helped write the first course outline and syllabus before teaming up with Zahry and Asllani to launch it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy experience with \u2018AI for Everyone\u2019 started my senior year of undergraduate,\u201d said Duggin, now a student in <\/span>UTC\u2019s Master of Computer Science program<\/span>. \u201cEventually the question arose, \u2018Should we have a course that teaches students about these tools on a general level?\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to give them cool examples to work with and be comfortable with.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, he helps lead lectures on generative AI using tools like ChatGPT, Claude and GitHub Copilot, plus a teaching platform called Amplify.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think this is important because AI is here to stay, whether you love it or hate it,\u201d Duggin said. \u201cIt\u2019s really an honor to be able to teach students how to use these tools\u2014not just to get answers or do things for them, but to really elevate them and help them stand out when they leave the classroom and leave UTC.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cody Posey, a senior human resources management major and student in the class, expressed the same feelings toward AI.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were against the internet,\u201d Posey said. \u201cIt\u2019s just smart to know how to use.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the class has shown him the different approaches to AI technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of different uses,\u201d he said. \u201cSome departments permit it and others don\u2019t. It\u2019s kind of enlightening to see. I think they\u2019re pushing it. But they want you to use it for the future, not just to graduate.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zahry compared AI to the moment when calculators first appeared in classrooms. What was once controversial is now deemed essential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they were first introduced, everyone said, \u2018Hey, students will forget about math and how to do the calculations.\u2019 They thought it would have side effects on mental, cognitive skills and so forth,\u201d Zahry said. \u201cBut now calculators are used for solving bigger problems, environmental problems and health problems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just starting with AI. We don\u2019t know where it will go, but it will definitely be a big change.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Asllani said this class will help prepare students as AI becomes a part of our daily lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArtificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept confined to computer science labs,\u201d Asllani said. \u201cIt\u2019s becoming a vital part of every industry and every career path.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the motivation behind the new course. It\u2019s designed to ensure that students from all majors, from literature to business, biology to art, can access the tools, knowledge and confidence to engage with AI in a meaningful way.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
